RAM memory uprgade

#1 Post by Zglanowany » Fri Mar 29, 2013 7:38 pm

Hi there

I need to make some upgrade in my T61. I have some serious doubts about max RAM that i canput into it.

my product is
ThinkPad T61 (6458-4UG)
T7300(2GHz), 1GB RAM, 80GB 5400rpm HD, 15.4in 1680x1050 LCD, 128MB nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M, CDRW/DVD, Intel 802.11agn wireless(n-disabled), Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ether, UltraNav, Sec Chip, FPR, 6c Li-Ion, WinVista Business 32

in some topic in this forum i've read, that only ine motherboard can work with more than 4gb.

Does it really works like that?

How Can I check which motherboard is installes in my T61?

and one additional question :)

It is possible to install internal 3g modem into T61?

I believe that you can put 8GB of RAM in any T61, although you may need to update the bios first.

As for the 3g modem, from what I know they weren't offered as standard on any models so there won't be any antennas.

BIOS update should not be problem :)

I can upgrade RAM to 8gb even on 32bit CPU?

While theoretically you could upgrade to 8GB, there would be little point as a 32bit OS would only see around 3.25GB...

Ah you're an Ubuntu user, how well are the Nvidia graphics in T61's supported?

hm...

I've just check CPU

http://ark.intel.com/products/29760/Int ... 00-MHz-FSB
and i think it is 64bit. All I need to do is get new memory, and install new system :)

nVidia works fine. I had small problems after Ubuntu installation, but i found additional package with few drivers for this

Oh yeah, my apologies, I didn't read through your specs. That CPU is 64bit capable so you should be okay running Ubuntu 64bit.

If you're looking to speed up general usage, 4GB RAM and an SSD would be a much more noticeable upgrade.

PC2-5300 677Mhz should work fine and I think it is the fastest that DDR2 will run at in T61's so bumping up to 800Mhz won't make any difference.

I think it will be hard to find 8 gb of 667Mhz memory in Poland :)

T61 will work fine if I'll put combination of 2gb 667 and 4gb 800?

I've never done so myself but I can't see any reason why it would't work...

Unless you're running VM's or doing *very* memory intensive work then 4GB would be enough. I'm running 4GB in my T61 and Ubuntu, even with around 8 chrome tabs and thunderbird open, doesn't really ever use above 2.5GB.

intense memory work:
SoapUIx2
Eclipse
2-3 web based application
HP Quality Center
Jira
MySQL
Rythmbox :)

Unfortunately i need to have all of this open and working in one time :)

I didn't mention some obvious elements like some pdf, or excel sheets :)

Now I have 3gb, and I have small problems to make my everyday work :)

A couple of my T61 have 2x4GB of RAM. In the past I've tried 1x1GB + 1x2GB, 1x1GB + 1x4GB, 1X2GB + 2x4GB and 2x2GB. All worked fine. I've also installed Linux Mint 13 on one without any problem. I never saw a reason not to install a 64 bit OS.

PC2-6400/DDR2-800 Sodimms are a little bit cheaper than PC2-5300/DDR2-667.
Both will work fine, even mixed, but all will run at FSB 667.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

I can confirm that PC2-6400 2X4GB 800 mHz works fine :)
