x40 left CTRL button is awkward

#1 Post by mferarri » Sun Mar 31, 2013 5:15 pm

I'm using an IBM x40 Thinkpad to do mainly coding in Java. I touch type and have to use the left CTRL button alot, but as x40 users would know, the button is awkwardly placed after the fn-key. This means that I either have to use my left ring finger to push the button or stretch my little finger just to get to the CTRL key. I am using Peppermint; a distribution based off Linux Mint.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I could make it easier to press the left CTRL key?

I wish I could help you, mate, but I touch type and I use many different Thinkpad keyboards (all of which have Ctrl to the right of Fn), and I never have any problems hitting the Ctrl key with my pinky. Maybe it depends on how big one's hands are?

Another option would be to replace your aging X40 with a more modern same-size X60 or X61.
There you can apply Middleton's modded BIOS, which offers the option to swap the Fn and Ctrl key next to it.
If you're interested, I have a great working & looking X60s with WWAN for sale:
