Performance Difference between the T60 and T42?

#1 Post by fefrie » Wed Apr 03, 2013 9:59 pm

I don't do much with my laptops, but one thing I got into was an online game called "The Last Stand: Deadzone"

Which is this flash intensive web based game that uses a lot of resources.

I was playing it on the T60 and it ran as normal, but on the T42 at work, it was really slow!

I was surprised at the difference in speed. On the T42 it's unplayable.

On the T60 the Cpu was below 50% but on the T42 it was Maxed out!

I'm wondering why the T42 is so slow, since the specs are reasonably similar.

T60: 1.83ghz T42:1.7

Both have 2gb of ram, but of course the T60 is 667mhz and the T42 is 333mhz

The t60 has x130064mb graphics, and the t42 has ati something but also 64mb video memory.

Both run windows xp.

The hard drives are both benchmarked at a slow 30mbs

I might expect the t42 to be slower with the slower memory, but not the cpu running at 100%

Am I looking at the architecture of pc computing a little too simply?

The T60, does play streaming HD video a little bit better, but untill this point, I didn't see much of a difference between a t60 and a t42. Now I'm glad I upgraded to a T60 and the T42 is regulated as a work machine....

Yes.

For anything that involves flash nowadays, PM CPUs are getting very long in the tooth.

Even the most basic Core Duo will outperform them in these circumstances.

The T60 has X1300 64mb graphics, and the T42 has ATI something but also 64mb video memory.
T60: 1.83ghz (times two!)
T42: 1.70ghz (times one)

Approximate Passmark benchmark scores :
T60 (assuming T2400 1.83 Core Duo) = 785
T42 (assuming SL7EP 1.70 Pentium M) = 414
T60 graphics (64mb ATI X1300) = 38
T42 gfx (assuming 64mb ATI 9000) = 3

Two cores and noticeably better graphics ability allows the T60 to do easily what the T42 can't.

T42 then T43 then T60 so T60 is a couple of generations newer.

Besides one being dual core and one being single core CPU, at equivalent speed a T60 CPU is faster and more efficient than a T42 CPU. In the T60, the chipset and memory are also faster. Chances are the wireless/NIC card is faster. T60 is native SATA so the HDD is faster. I could go on. Besides being black and bearing the Thinkpad name, they are not that similar.
