Cloning my HDD to a SSD?
Cloning my HDD to a SSD?
Hi all,
Got the SSD and now need to clone the HDD into it.
Using Mint 64 as OS.
I have a docking bay(? instead of the cd player) where the SSD fit into.
I have a wee issue as I can do a clonezilla disc to clone the HDD, but this take away the SSD bay and I don't have the USB connection to plug the SSD into the computer. Not sure I make any sense there???
Once this is done I could install the SSD in the proper hard drive slot and use the regular HDD in a window OS for some of the stuff that need to be windows.
I tried to put clonezilla into a USB but couldn't make it happen...
Any hint there?
Thank you.
Olivier

Re: Cloning my HDD to a SSD?
Little more info such as machine and machine type would be helpful.
I don't recommend cloning a HDD to SSD. I've done it a few times using Clonezilla on a T61, T400, X61 and X201. Each time I had to manually realign the partition using Parted Magic. Each time the SSD was placed in the main drive bay, HDD via external USB, and Clonezillia via bootable CD as part of Parted Magic's suite. I found that after alignment and everything, it took just as long as it is to do a fresh install so that's my preferred choice for SSD. Plus I really like a fresh install "feeling" of any OS.

Re: Cloning my HDD to a SSD?
Thank you. I was hoping it'll be "all like before" but faster on the SSD...
I got a T400 . Mint 64. 4gb Ram. Waiting on a 8gb upgrade.
SSD is the Plextor 256 Extreme. Got it as it has 5 year garanty and good review. This should let me have a super dupper fast laptop at low cost and OK for many years
Cheers.

Re: Cloning my HDD to a SSD?
I have Mint 13, 160 GB SSD and 8 GB RAM in a T400. It absolutely flies. The extra RAM was nice but it I did not notice any performance improvement. This is not surprising as 4 GB is plenty for my uses.
Re: Cloning my HDD to a SSD?
I thought tho too. 4 gig is plenty but hey, there was a discount on the retailer here , 34 pounds for new 2X4 gig RAM...
I can sell my 2X2gig for 15, making the 8 gig 15 pounds... Cannot reaaly beat that, even if I don't use it for 15 quid its worth it
Going to do a clear install tomorrow then.
Thank you
