Re: T42 15" and 14" compatible??
Parts such as the optical drive, battery, memory, CPU, internal WiFi card, modem card-these all can be swapped between the two machines without issue (and I may be forgetting a few items). The keyboards are not physically compatible-they are different between the 14" and 15" machines. It will work electrically, but the mounting studs are in different locations so it won't fit.
I lost count...

- and (in addition what Eric Giles said), also the motherboard can be interchanged between 14" and 15" T42's.
Since the 15" is (obviously!) a bit wider than the 14" model, a so-called "interposer card" is used in 15" machines to extend some of the connectors on the motherboard to become accessible on the sides of the 15"
For more information, please see the Lenovo System service parts - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p and the Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p. Need more info? Have a look in the Hardware removal and installation videos - ThinkPad T40/p, T41/p, T42/p, T43/p.
... and, ooh, of course also: Welcome to the forum!

Re: T42 15" and 14" compatible??
In fact, I think that just about everything interchanges, the only things that DONT interchange are the keyboard, screen, and enclosure plastics (which would include the scratchpad/palm rest, which is visibly different.)
Your first step should be, to download the thinkpad hardware maintenance manual for T40-T42 machines. The tables in the back are sometimes split (i.e. for LCDs, and also for keyboards), according to machine type (14.1" or 15"), but if the parts-number tables apply to both machines, then the parts work on both sizes of machine. That's the definitive answer on all of these questions.

Lots of thinkpads (10+) but I would never be so stupid as to list them all because that would spam everybody's searches and people who *do* try to list them all would be jerks.
