DMA broken??? only PIO Works? X41

#1 Post by ganon11000 » Wed Apr 10, 2013 10:34 am

I have a X41 & used to use a CF Card (Lexar 8GB) and it would freeze for 2-5 secs every few secs (constant freezing then working) so I ordered a crucial M4 mSATA SSD With a mSATA to PATA adapter made for the X41 and it does the same thing. switching to PIO (mode 4) fixes this bit the performance is awful compared to what it should be!

What is going wrong?
IBM Thinkpad A31 2.0GHz Pentium 4, 768MB RAM, 40GB HDD and a ATI 7500 16MB shimmed
Lenovo T420 4236-PA8: WiFi card replaced with a Broadcom one (fixes most DPC latency), 64GB Crucial M4 SSD added as OS drive, original HDD in a DVD to HDD caddy.

X41->Sata->SATA-PATA chip->PATA-SATA adapter->mSata drive
Remove the SATA-PATA chip, install an mSATA connector instead of the PATA connector, and you should be fine.

how do I do that and what do I need to do that?

and also using write caching on PIO causes this to happen!!

I'm theoretically Saved!!!

It turns out that the JM20330 chip in my adapter doesn't support TRIM so I just need to disable trim or install windows XP (what is better - Windows 8 vs XP)

I'll update tomorrow once I wake up, thanks to "automobus" for the tips :)

I was only guessing about ata_trim, because you say the problem persists in PIO. Plenty of people experience stuttering in DMA. Ask your Web spider of choice about JM20330 DMA errors.

Maybe you are lucky your anonymous-China-on-eBay adapter works at all. Two weeks ago, tim.k reported an incompatibility with a name-brand JM20330-based device his R52.
