software installer -- "failed to download the package&q

#1 Post by damorg » Thu May 05, 2005 4:18 pm

Hello People,

A couple days ago, as part of a monthly routine, I started the software updater.

I was notified that I needed an update and was prompted to download and install. The new version installed with no problems.

Upon running it, I noticed it was all Lenovo'ed up with new verbage etc. The scan runs (slowly, maybe) and returns some potential updates. Upon trying to download them, the app errors out of the process almost immediately with "failed to download the package"

Anybody else seeing this? I guess it's my feeling that this is perhaps just a temporary glitch as services migrate and Lenovo gets things up and running but I wanted to check in and see folks' opinions.

Thanks,

Dan

Well, I can see why most folks aren't having this problem...it turns out it was related to my use of a proxy (the Proxomitron).

Though I never had an issue previously, something in my proxy's filter set prevents this newest version of the software installer from successfully downloading updates. Don't know if this b/c of a change in the software updater or if I made a change in a filter since the last time I tried to update.

When I added the ibm site contacted to the bypass list for the Proxomitron, the download was successful.

Just thought I'd post in case anybody runs into something similar.

proxy problems

A new version of Software Installer will be released next week to correct this problem. Fixes were added to the application on May 2nd to correct some proxy problems that were reported and this error surfaced as a result of those updates.

thanks for the information. this is interesting...I will keep my eyes open for the new version.

i had contacted IBM via the website feedback from the help link in the software installer download page but they didn't seem to be aware of any issue. since i worked around it, i didn't pursue it further.
