optimizing my x61 tablet
optimizing my x61 tablet
hi all i am new to the forum although i have been viewing it numerous times daily for the last week or so.
i have sold my samsung galaxy note n-7000 (got tired of tiny screen(2 me) and no windows support) and acquired a mint condition x61 tablet with xga multitouch screen for the amazing price of $150 including tablet 2x4 cell 3 hr batteries, 2 stylses one used and one brand new, the x ultrabase, charger, external ibm combo drive and a targus leather bag . it was dirty so i opened it up and cleaned every little part in it.
it came with its original windows vista and i am guessing a driver problem made my finger touch uncalibrated so i upgraded it to windows 8 x64 ( skipped windows 7 although alot of people recommended it , is it better than 8 ???)
windows 8 ran pretty smooth after giving me the run around for some drivers specially for pen and touch, however it ran smoothly with exception of 2 freezes when running browser skype and powerpoint thats when i decided to upgrade the 2 gb ram. after numerous research managed to get 8 gb of ddr2 667 ram for $90 i upgraded to middelton's bios and installed the ram and haven't experienced any freezes since.
however now am considering switching my hd 100gb 7200rpm for an ssd but still have not found my match.
also read something about overclocking would appreciate if some one can advise me on (the prossesor is probably the weakest link as far as upgrading) i have an L7500 however my laptop already runs hot (never used a temp utility to actually check how hot. i am pretty happy with my AGN wireless card could it be the cause?
i have been looking at 3g gps voice combo cards (replace my note's functionality) apparently the ones that fit the description are huawei Em820w and sierra mc8795v does any one know if they will work??
another option would be to use a usb modem and use the internal pcie for egpu or ssd or usb3 any advice? also can the pc card slot be used for an ssd ?
as far as the screen is concerned i dont mind it really is the sxga worth it (i need my touch) thank you and am sorry for one loooooong question :p

If you used some paragraphs your post would be much easier to read and it'll most likely increase the probability you'll get some replies.

Re: optimizing my x61 tablet
The mPCIe slot of the X61 Tablet doesn't support mSATA, IIRC.
Cheers.

Re: optimizing my x61 tablet
Maybe there are SSD which utilises true PCIe interface, I've no idea. But even if there're, the system probably won't be able to boot with them.
For your other ideas, I'd say they're interesting and worthwhile to pursue if you've time and take on it as a hobby or hack project.
Cheers. : )

Re: optimizing my x61 tablet
good ur online, so i cut the 7th pin on the processor and unlocked my cpuz full potential it said however to tweak the ram before doing that i tried tweaking one found out my settings were better and just closed the program without validating checksum on that ram stick and now only one of them work after the pin tweak ( probably the un-touched one since they are variable ram sticks) now i need help repairing the first 1 since my x61 wont read it nw
Re: optimizing my x61 tablet
Hi Ahmed,
I had a 100GB OWC Mercury in my X61S, then a 160GB Intel 320 series.
Pretty much any of the 2.5" SATA SSDs will work fine in the X61 series.
My L7700/1.8GHz X61S has a 6300 wireless card and still runs warm.
I would not try overclocking.
I tried the SXGA screen and it was kinda cool, but small fonts. XGA is ok for me.
Good health, Weogo

Re: optimizing my x61 tablet
Could you share the links to info about O/Cing the processor?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Tell your OS (windows or whatever) to use more pixels to make the characters by changing the DPI setting.
You'll get better formed characters (and everything else) at the correct size (or whatever size you want by tweaking the setting).
Cheers,
Bret

You have to flash Middleton's BIOS and tape PIN 20.
How do You make L7500 to run cool?
What is the idle temperature?
