IBM X31 nightmare - the saga continues

#1 Post by Txiasaeia » Thu May 05, 2005 11:37 pm

Well, the nightmare's mostly over, anyway; the motherboard that I've been waiting for for 5.5 weeks is finally here & installed. Unfortunately, the tech forgot to put in my model & serial #s when he flashed the BIOS. I've tried flashing it myself, but it won't let me enter the machine type & doesn't give me an option for the serial number. So the hardware maintenance manual says that I need a "ThinkPad Hardware Maintenance Diskette," version 1.71 or higher. I'm tired, I'm grumpy, and I'd just like to get this fixed so I can move on with my life. Can anybody please help me out here? I'd take it back to the tech but I really can't afford any more lost time. Thanks very much.

edit: if it helps, the filename is maint171.exe, but good luck finding it on the net ;)

Argh! I can sympathise - had this happen to me when my Mobo for my old R32 was replaced. Tech eventually came to my house and used that diskette you mention to sort it out.

Interestingly, that tech eventually bought my R32 from me when I purchase the X40!

I had the exact same situation two weeks ago (and I couldn't find the file anywhere on my own either). I called Monday. They had a box to me the very same day. I sent it with the driver that same day (Monday). Wednesday morning I had my laptop back!!! If you could get the same great service I would do that (you probably can). I was very happy. That's why I buy ThinkPads.
