Re: running windows 8 on a T61p
One of T61 with NV 140M is running Windows 8 just fine. Nothing special to report with the install process. Load Win 8, run Win Update, run Thinkpad Vantage System update and install the software and features that I want. Much as I tried, I don't like Metro at all so Classic Shell is the only reason why I've come to tolerate Win 8 over Win 7 in this machine. Having a SSD as my boot and program drive, I do not notice any speed difference between the two OS.

hmm i also have a 64 bit copy of win 7 would you recommend that instead ??

Re: running windows 8 on a T61p
Personal preference really. I recommend at least 4 GB of RAM and therefore a 64 bit OS to go with it. Personally I find that Win 7 does everything that I need and that Win 8 do not justify the cost to upgrade all of my machines. Also I do not like the fact that MS forced Metro on me and took away the "Start" button. That's just me, I don't like being forced into something but I do like being offered an option. To me it's a matter of principle. Rumor have it that the start button might make a come back with Win 8.1. I might reconsider then or wait until Win 9. I typically only upgrade every second Windows version anyways.
Re: running windows 8 on a T61p
I noticed a significant boot time advantage with Win8 as compared to Win7, both with SSD.
With Win7 and a 7200rpm HDD startuptime was 80 - 90 secs.
The replacement with a SSD gave boot-time of 45 secs.
Win8 resulted in boot-time of 15-20 secs.
