T510 unexpected shutdowns - often when charging battery. HEL

#1 Post by RastaFarlig » Thu Apr 25, 2013 8:19 pm

Hey guys.
I Own a refurbished T510, it was a steal and I am really happy with it. I used to work as a IT Tech guy, actually repairing a lot of thinkpads.
Now i'm the victim!
My computer crashes unexpected sometimes, it can vary from once a month to twice a day.. My troubleshooting steps:

* 4 different chargers
* new battery (the new one crashes far more often than the used one, often in relation with charging the battery)
* reinstall with win 8
* I have never experienced the PC Crashing without having the battery in, I used it for about 3 weeks without battery)
* I have never experienced a crash only on battery.

I bought the computer from a danish refurb company, me and my 2 friends all bought the same T510. Friend 1 have experienced unexpected shutdowns just like me. Friend 2 have experienced the computer booting up after shutting down.
I have no problems disassembling the computer, I've done it a thousand times. But this is my precious, so i'd really like to have some clues before disassembling if you understand.
I fear it is the motherboard? My computer also suffers from the famous high pitch noise.
Somebody that have a clue, or a sneaky fix?
Thanks! Rasmus

Are you using a Genuine Lenovo Battery?
I used off brand Batteries in my old T61 which caused blue screens anywhere from daily to once a month.
Replacing it with a genuine Lenovo Batt fixed the problem.

Also check your ram and hard drive for errors.

Hey hoax.

Thanks for the reply.

I will try a memtest and check the HDD for bad sectors.
What wonders me is that my friend has the same problem, actually not anymore, bu we had two different harddrives, and i've swopped the HDD with a momentus XT, so in all 3 different hdds observing momentarily crashes. So I hardly doubt the harddrive is the sinner :/

I think the battery is genuine, it looks really genuine, and I bought it from my supplier saying "IT HAS TO BE GENUINE".. Is there a way to tell if it is 3rd party?

could it be that my charger has too low amps? it is only 3.25a??

sorry for the late reply!
The battery should say "Lenovo" and have a "FRU number".

If that doesn't do the trick then it might be a damaged charging circuit.
GL mate! :thumbs-UP:
