T41 CPU replacement

#1 Post by Mike8 » Fri May 06, 2005 8:39 am

Does it make sense to replace the CPU (1.4 Banias) with a 1.6 Banias? Or will there no perfomance gain?

Thanks,

Mike8

I very much doubt you would see any difference. I replaced my 1.4GHz Banias with a 1.8GHz Dothan. That, coupled with a 7200-rpm hard drive made a big difference overall. I think both upgrades were needed, and only doing one would have had a marginal impact. In your case, 200MHz is not much of an increase. ... JD Hurst

Agreed. Even side by side you would probably not notice any difference when using the laptop.
IBM ThinkPad T42p (2373-7XU): 1.8GHz/1024MB, 15" UXGA, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.
T42 (2374-3VU): 1.7GHz/512MB, 14.1"SXGA+, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.

But what do you think should I do to increase the performance of my Tp. It's a T41 2373-1FU.

Tough to say. A lot of it depends on your computing habits.

I definitely agreewith jdhurst that a 1.8Ghz (or 2.0) Dothan with 7200rpm drive would probably make the most noticeable difference, but of course the cost of higher-performing processors doesn't scale well with the perforamnce gained.

If you have 512MB installed, 1GB may help, but it really depends on how many programs you run simultaneously.

Unfortunately, laptops in general aren't extremely upgradable, physically or cost-effectively.
