Are "compatible" 9-cell batteries reliable... and safe?

I am considering one of these two batteries:

Reliable? Safe? Will they last?

Does anyone have any experience? I really don't want to waste money on something which is poor.

Get a genuine battery even if you have to pay more it's well worth it.

I agree with ajkula66, it's a huge risk buying 3rd party batteries and I would never do it to a machine I couldn't afford to loose. That being said I have bought them before and haven't had any trouble. Yet...

I definitely wouldn't recommend them though.

The battery in my t400 I have had for a while now I bought on ebay used. It is a genuine Lenovo and the seller posted a screenshot of the ThinkVantage status showing it in great health. I got a very good price and it is still holding a hour+ charge for almost a year now. I have bought cheap "off brand" batteries new on ebay for my other thinkpads, and they never seem to last more then 3-6 months before they suddenly stop holding a charge or die all together.

IMO if you want to save money, get a second hand known good Lenovo battery. If you have a need for the longest battery life, buy a new Lenovo battery.

My "fake" A31 battery is still going strong (came with 25% wear in December still 25% wear today!)

I am no ThinkPad expert. However here's my take: Depends! If your notebook is primary used for surfing, has really no critical data and for mobility you've moved on to something else (a.k.a. tablets, ultra-books..modern), etc. causing this particular +3 year old notebook to be secondary, go for 3rd. party product. However, ebay is not really that great, would prefer Amazon and that too, batteries having extensive good reviews. I heard, improperly designed batteries have a tendency to burst and who knows, what corners were cut by this 3rd. party manufacturer? That's a risk you'll have to take, I guess if going down the route. I wouldn't then recommend the same if children are using it, normally stored and placed near any inflammable areas and surely not an option if the notebook's generally plugged in and no one's home...

I have nothing to do with them at all but my cousin's purchased from them before (for his X61/X61s and R500 TPs) and they've been alright for him - the batteries he's received were manufactured between 2010/11 but none of them had any dead cells.

EDIT: Appreciate they have a smaller battery cell size but it's still a decent price IMHO but also there's the possibility that they would accept an offer for them as well.

That was extremely kind of you to post that, but I have now received my shiny new, third-party 9 cell battery from "fulwholesale", and it seems to be working a treat; I've seen roughly 5 hours on the first charge, with a custom power profile set for CPU throttled to 40% max, and I put it on charge again once Windows 7 gave me a 7% alarm
