Z60t Batt. not charging

#1 Post by bmninada » Wed May 08, 2013 8:59 am

Bought non-OEM battery and it's not getting charged. Laptop using AC adapter works fine. However, following are the symptoms when battery is inserted.
  • - The LED glows orange and constantly blinks
    - Even leaving it overnight, does not help. Remains same, i.e blinking
    - If laptop is switched off and connected to AC, then LED glows steady orange. Again left overnight, no change
    - Using ThinkPad power manager states battery condition as critical and needs to be charged, says its being charged. No other information is available, like remaining charge, etc., etc
    - Using Windows XP power manager via Control Panel - same story.
    - Upon feeling the battery, its slightly warm (but not sure if due to charging or radiated heat from notebook)
Questions:
[*]What could be the issue? Is my MB bad, or could it be my power adapter or the jack located in the notebook.
[*]1 thing i dont understand is if the notebook's working fine in power, could it really be the adapter or the jack?
[*]I have a digital multi-meter and is there any tests I can possibly do?

Return that piece of garbage (battery) before it damages your charging circuit...

Let me see if that's feasible.
I did some tests using my multi-meter set to DC voltage and notebook ON using AC power. The terminals where the battery goes in is divided into 3 sections. 2 small pins, a gap, series of 4 pins, a gap and then the final 2 large pins. My observation is any of the 2 small pins and any of the 4 middle pins I am getting a constant 2.8 V. Between any of the 2 large pins and any of the 4 small pins: 3.3V. Between the 2 small and 2 large: 0.0 V. I believe the charging system is working fine. If only I had a real Lenovo/IBM battery to test.....

Here's some information from the Z60t Hardware Maintenance Manual on how to check out the battery:

Thanks a lot. By testing the resistance between pins 4 and 5, I get M ohms, instead of k ohms. Effectively, proving the battery itself is bad. I found an used IBM battery (on loan) and it's working fine, which proves my MB and charging system's fine.
Now, the big problem is finding a Z60T battery, even Lenovo site doesn't seem to have it anymore! Any leads?

What are the FRU P/N, or ASM P/N numbers on your own battery and on the on-loan battery?
AFAIK the Z60 machines use the same battery as T60/T500 machines.
Their very latest types are 6-cell with model "41+" and 9-cel with model "41++".
I have several 9-cell batteries for sale, all with FRU P/N 42T4620 and ASM P/N: 92P1134

Unfortunately, Z60t and Z61t use a different battery that is specific to them only...
