Linux on Thinkpad T43

#1 Post by massits » Wed May 22, 2013 6:15 am

hello everybody
I have tested a couple of Linux distros on my T43 like :
Ubuntu,
LinuxMint ( ubuntu based), ( 9,11,13 and 14)
Fedora
Suse
in Gnome, Lxde, xfce

but the only distro that I can appreciate on T43 is Backbox

This distro recognise ALL the hardware, and automactically install my Huawei e1750 3g usb card.

At the moment, the only usb card that i'm trying to install is a dvb tv adapter.

all in dual boot on a ultrabay SSD ( ocz 120Gb)

Massits:

That is interesting. Never heard of Backbox, but I've successfully used a variety of distros on my T43.

I see Backbox is a quite recent distro, developed in Italy, your home. It seems like an odd recommendation for the general Linux user. Are you a Blackbox developer?

"Linux Today" says: <BackBox is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu Desktop, and designed for performing penetration testing, incident response, computer forensics . . . >

no no, I'm just a linux user.
it's really advanced :
It has recognise the Huawei e1750 3G usb card and all the hardware.
Install the dvb tv USB aF9015 CARD ( a cheaper one ) was very easy following the ubuntu instructions here (for my card, the forum is in italian, but google translator can help ;) ) http://forum.ubuntu-it.org/viewtopic.ph ... mobile=off

here is the international backbox forum http://forum.backbox.org/index.php

The most recent backbox Linux that I installed and tested was based on Ubuntu 12.04. Nice xfce desktop. Good default color scheme. Tons of PEN testing terminal based tools. Not for the "casual" linux user. Ran great on a DELL 990 i7 and Thinkpad x220 i5 of course. Found all the hardware. Very specialized distro.

I recommend giving CrunchBang Linux (http://crunchbang.org/) a try, very slim distro that worked very well on my T42. You will need the non-pae version.

interesting but..
the NON PAE distros do NOT permit a correct ( when works) use of Virtualbox if needed

Since you're on a T43, a PAE version will be fine. It's T42 and older units that won't work with it.
