Possible to swap T42 & T43 LCD assembly?

#1 Post by brinstar117 » Thu May 23, 2013 11:14 am

I recently picked up a T42 Type 2373-JTU and a T43 Type 2687-D3U.

The T42 has a 1024x768 14.1" screen.
The T43 has a 1400x1050 14.1" screen.

I was initially excited by the T43, but once I started using it I found that it ran much hotter and louder than my T42. I'd prefer a quieter machine with a higher resolution. Thanks for any info!

Welcome to the forum.
The T43 has a 1.8GHz CPU and the T42 has a 1.7GHz CPU.
The reason why the T43 runs as hot as it does, is most likely that it needs the thermal paste between CPU and fan replaced.
T42 could probably use the same.
To make T43 run quieter, you could transfer the fan from the T42 into the T43.
I would stay with the T43 if I were you.
But just in case, you can swap the complete lids between those laptops anyway.
All you'd need to additionally do, is swap the clearplate at the right bottom of the inside lid.

Just in case: they use different CPU, RAM and motherboard-type, all other parts can be swapped.

I finally got around to swapping the LCD panels + their respective inverters, however I get this problem on my T42

T43 LCD panel + T43 inverter in my T42

The video output to the panel is not aligned and has the wrong ratio. The top 2.5 inches of the screen image repeats on the bottom edge as can be seen by the same icons.

I'm not sure if there's anything I can do to remedy this. I also have a 14.1 inch T60 with a 1400x1050 SVGA+ screen. However, before I take it apart to give that a try I want to see if anyone has any ideas.

OK have you swapped the LCD cables as well?

Like I posted above:

That would have been so much easier and faster...

T4x/R5x series LCD panels (XGA, SXGA+, UXGA, QXGA) each use different LCD-cables and inverters.
Lids of the same size (14.1" or 15") including their contents, are swappable within the series.
BUT: not all panels work on all models!
On machines with ATI graphics, all panels will work (provided they have proper cable/inverter).
On machines with Intel graphics:
- XGA (14.1" + 15") works on all
- SXGA+ (14.1") will NOT work
- SXGA+ (15") will only work on T43/R52
- Any others (UXGA, QXGA etc., any size) will not work

I swapped the LCD cables and now it works perfectly. I didn't realize that the cables were different. Thanks for all of the help!
