Thanks! My only serious gripe until now: The keyboard really flexes on the left part around the a key, it seems my keyboard is slightly twisted, maybe I will get a new one to replace it (because I can´t stand flexing keyboards).

...and also of course the obvious: The lackluster screen. But can´t do anything about that unfortunately...
Pokrzept wrote:Nicely looking unit, I really do like this 1st-to-be Ultrabook. How is Windows 10 preview doing on it ?
Its doing really nicely. No problems at all, it mostly works out of the box (with the exception of things like UltraNav obviously). Even the fingerprint reader.

I only had a problem after upgrading directly from Windows 7 to Windows 10 Build 9926: The CPU was running at 99 % all the time and the fan as well. Solved this by re-installing it, now it works very good.

Don´t have WWAN in my machine, so can´t say anything about that though.

I've bought new X301 keyboards that have been twisted as well. Not sure what people do to these things. I'm really clinging on to my current X301 keyboard that I got new, it's pretty much perfect. Finding a flawless X301 is much harder than one might expect.

As for the screen, it is of course possible to swap it for various other models, but the amount of work that is required is crazy. I only recommend it for enthusiasts. I just wish the X301 had a better battery life, then I might still be using mine today.

The creation in this post isn't new and revolutionary, as the mods utilized here have been widely discussed before. But the item is new to me, so I make a post about it just to show that I am not just fooling around without actually doing some real work once and a while.

A forum user was kind enough to sell me a Quad Core modded T61 integrated graphics motherboard, with 4GB of SPD flashed RAM. But I only got a bare motherboard, so the hunt started for a suitable shell, preferably with an UXGA panel. And I succeeded: Even here in Norway I managed to find a T61 that had died from nVidia failure. So a couple of days ago the whole thing was temporarily assembled in the shell, with a 42W2028 fan, and booted up for the first time with a Linux live CD. The mod was tested before the seller shipped the board to me, so there was no doubt that the mods worked at one point. But meanwhile the board has been shipped, handled and dealt with, so it's always exiting to boot up something like this for the first time. Things can happen.

Everything worked on the first boot, and the UXGA screen was bright and flawless. Unfortunately the shell is a little too beat up for my liking, so as soon as this whole project is up and running with Win7, Throttlestop and other necessary software installed, I will probably trace a better shell for it. I also lack almost all screws and a suitable SSD for it, so I need to wait for some eBay packages to arrive.

The eyes of Victor Frankenstein (Or was it Norway Pad?) reflected in the Q9100 CPU while he assembles his monster.

Image

The BIOS recognizes the CPU, as did Linux Mint after I loaded if from a Live CD.

Thanks. I was initially trying to take a picture to have the details from the CPU labels, when I realized my face reflected perfectly in the surfaces, and I could do something cool with it. And today the T61 screw kit from China arrived, so I know what I'll be doing tonight.

Word of the day! :thumbs-UP: I have no friends that are interested in computing in the way I am. Not even my wife's IT workmates care, they just have IT as an occupation. So the people on this forum are the only ones I "meet" that share my interest. And I have sure met lots of nice people here. It was actually me who started the FlatStanley thread, as an attempt to see a glimpse of other users' life, and simply socialize a little bit.

Indeed, any forum is owned by its owner but is for its members, provided they abide by the rules.

During my time as a member of this forum, other members and I have had interesting and friendly interchanges, usually to mutual advantage. I may have crossed a few peoples' paths although that is because I am a liberally minded person.

Years ago anyone's colour, race, creed, or sexual orientation mattered more than common sense. Today we are free of all that nonsense. Thank goodness for that.

That seems like a fun thread, but maybe too old and too long to revive? And where did all those users go? I remember some of those names from before I signed up and became a contributing member, but now most of them seem to not post anymore.

Maybe someone starts a new "Who's behind the computer - 2015", or even simply "Who are you". I could do it, but I started the Flat Stanley thread, so if I start another social thread, I might be mistaken as actually being social. I guess I am social when I can discuss cars, computers and house restoration. Pianowizard mentioned in the other thread that anyone with a Facebook profile could PM him to become friends. I'm not that active on Facebook, but my profile is there, updated now and then with pictures taken of me by my wife. I am actually more active on Instagram, where my account is dedicated to cars and computers. So I leave it at that: PM me and we'll connect. I prefer to not post any names/accounts here, to avoid leaving too much personal information public.

And now we've derailed this thread too, guys. But that's the fun. Someone better start that social thread.

That's the case for me too. I used Facebook very much the first years, but the more political rants, racist stuff, games, ads, pictures of people's dinners and general nonsense I got, I almost stopped using it. I was more missing some pure social threads here on the forum, like I wrote in Khipata's new Facebook thread. I started the Flat Stanley thread, but I don't want to be the one starting all of them.

The thread about meeting in person was really great, btw. :) I'll make sure to post there when we go to the US this summer, to see if someone from the northwest can meet up.

It's Saturday so finally I have some free time to write a short notice about few new units gathered in past few weeks. Three months ago I started to work in new company and since than I have had a lot of thoughts about getting new work horse for automation and electrical engineering job. During this time I was hoping to witness Thinkpad-brand restart after a year with horrible 2014 generation. Unfortunately Lenovo decided to make laugh of professionals that need serious mobile workstation and provided one cock-up after another a.k.a W541 and W550s. Who the hell needs and Quad-Core unit which throttle and locks on minimum frequency after 15 minutes of work, or even more who needs mobile workstation with an ULV processor. Bloody hell that is antagonism. Every human patience has its limits and at that point I decided to say goodbye to the new Thinkpad products. Making long story short I end up with Dell Precision M4800.

Beside my new workstation I have had opportunity to gather two great ultra portables:
* x201 w/ i5-580m, 8 GiG of RAM and 128 GB Samsung 840 WLAN/BT/WWAN+GPS - this one little fellow awaits for WXGA+ Toshiba panel which I am going to buy sooner or later;
* my very own and really hard to get Thinkpad Reserve Edition (one of 5000 manufactured units ?! correct me if Im wrong) in a mint condition, one hell of an awesomeness. Leather cover has 3 small imperfections that can be removed easily with proper leather cosmetics. Palmrest and display frame are slightly different than those you can find in regular units - Lenovo decided to rubberize these elements.

Below you may find few pictures of my new belongings ;-)

Awesome Thinkpad, nice find! :)

But I must have slept through class some time. What Thinkpad model is the Reserve Edition based on? I have never paid much attention to the ultraportable models, that's maybe the reason this has slipped my attention.

Reserve Edition was designed to celebrate 15th anniversary of Thinkpad brand and basically that's an X61s covered in high quality leather case. Compared to regular unit it has (beside mentioned case) dedicated palm rest, display frame and bezel, flat 8-cell battery. Additionally every unit out of produced 5000 came with external optical drive and hard drive. You may find some additional info @ that page: http://blog.livedoor.jp/toku_bow/archives/1591632.html

PS. My source still has 4 units in a great shape but unfortunately all of them misses mentioned case :(

Thanks, I wasn't aware. Judging from the pictures in your link, the whole box it came in seems like one nice big collectors kit with lots of stuff in. Good thing I never come around to buy something like this as a brand new item, as the poor laptop would have spent it's entire life packed in it's original box. I suspect you probably won't be exactly wearing your Reserve Edition out either.

You are absolutely right my friend ;-) as you may see on one of the photos I've three x6x units allready, and two of them are basically NOS, Only the x61s in the middle is in heavy use of my wife. I'm one of those not entirely sane collectors who buy two spare units for every single unit that is in use, just in case if something breaks down (to be honest it never does  ).

I got this off of eBay recently with some money that I made.

It's a 15.4" widescreen T60 in untested condition. I theorize that widescreen T60s aren't all that common, because all the ones I had seen in real life before this had been 4:3. As far as I know, there is no 14.1" widescreen T60.

It has the factory 1GB stick of RAM, but no hard drive. The MTM indicated that it has Intel graphics, so I'm hoping that it'll fire on when I can get an AC adapter for it. It's been a while since I've owned a ThinkPad, Lenovo or IBM. My first one was a T42 that I bought back in October 2010. I ended up trading it in around October 2011 for various reasons, not least because it was showing signs of southbridge failure. Then in November 2012 I got an X61s for school work, and ended up selling that in August 2013 because I just didn't need it anymore.

The T60 is in decent condition. Not much of any wear on the keyboard, everything looks straight. There are some scratches on the palmrest though. Somebody was obviously a bit careless while trying to remove that sticker. Obviously they didn't have any Goo Gone. :P

When my wife visited the US recently, she had extra luggace space on the way back home. So when I found these for sale on eBay, I couldn't resist:

Still wrapped, with the IBM seal. Almost a shame to open it up, but I see no value in an item I can't use. Or even see at all. Looking forward to see what software and syncing possibilities there are. I somehow doubt it can be synced with any useful online services, but we'll see. From the description on Thinkwiki.de http://thinkwiki.de/WorkPad_C3 it seems to use a RS232 cable, so depending on what OS it is compatible with (Win2K or XP), I will probably install the software on the 770Z or one of my T30s.
