Yes, there's one for me. In fact, I haven't been so excited about a new model since Lenovo's announcement of the X300 Thinkpad over 6 years ago. It's Sony's Vaio Pro 13: http://www.anandtech.com/show/7029/sony ... -13-hybrid
Basically, it is THE laptop I have been praying for: 13.3" 1920x1080 IPS touchscreen, 2.34 lbs, sufficiently high quality (carbon fiber, reasonable keyboard), and not insanely expensive. Okay, I was actually praying for 13.3" 1680x945 (144.9 DPI) so that things would be easier to view, but 1920x1080 (165.6 DPI) should be tolerable.

Re: Is there a current laptop that you are VERY excited about?
No (Samsung Series 9 is promising)
When my X220 retires, I will return to a silent desktop and a cheap tablet (with decent display) as a mobile device.

Re: Is there a current laptop that you are VERY excited about?
Thinkpad tablet refresh with latest atom, ddr3 support. Yeah, after riding the high end/cutting edge for a while, I realize that desktops/laptops like 4 years or newer are perfectly adequate performance wise and feature wise for like 99% of my use. My latest builds/purchases are strictly off lease thinkcentres whereas before, mid to top-end thinkpads only.
Re: Is there a current laptop that you are VERY excited about?
The Vaio Pro 13 does sound interesting, hardware-wise. But its screen, from the promotional pic, looks glossy; and I could never be excited with a keyboard like that.

YES! Finally a 14.* inch 1080p screen! It's probably also the first screen of this size with IPS! 3.80 lbs is too heavy though. Transplanting it into the X1 Carbon would make it the most interesting Thinkpad ever.

No laptops excite me. I only get excited over new desktop hardware, such as the new desktop Haswell CPUs which were released recently and the new desktop motherboards and desktop graphics cards.

No, not really. Admittedly that system76 14" laptop does look interesting. If I hadn't bought my G580 less than 6 months ago that is.

Re: Is there a current laptop that you are VERY excited about?
The first notebook i'd possibly bother about after having decided to stick with my Frankenpads for the foreseeable future would probably be coming from a project developed under the codename "Novena":
See www.bunniestudios.com/blog/?p=2686, and www.kosagi.com/w/index.php?title=Novena_Main_Page, and xoblo.gs.
The downside of modern devices and hardware is that it is losing the open character which made PC's so interesting in the first place. Increasingly more we are getting closed black boxes which are only supposed to run what the vendor intended to shove down the customer's throat, without giving any option to explore and actually take advantage of the actual possibilities of the hardware according to one's own needs and wishes. That's why i am looking forward to projects like the one mentioned above.

Now that's interesting, especially since the project's main participant has explicitly stated that he loved trackpoints and wanted to integrate OEM Thinkpad keyboards. Thanks for sharing.rumbero wrote:The first notebook i'd possibly bother about after having decided to stick with my Frankenpads for the foreseeable future would probably be coming from a project developed under the codename "Novena":

Re: Is there a current laptop that you are VERY excited about?
I do like that Helix. It's basically a Surface Pro with the "I want to be an iPad killer" chintsy-ness removed, and then made epic with the Thinkpad name. Not a bespoke Thinkpad by any stretch of imagination, but still absolutely cool.
Like the stinkers above who are simply interested in the upcoming and... now, released, desktop hardware, I too have taken interest in pretty much anything bearing the newer Haswell hardware. I'm loving how a lot of the newer performance laptops are being dressed up, and I'd really love to see how the next-gen W-series turns out. An i7-4700QM equipped W5xx would be a really amazing get up and go machine. Haswell's only shown impressive bounds over the previous Ivy Bridge/Sandy Bridge tech, and I imagine it'll make a huge difference once it hits the X-series and other mobile platforms, seeing as it's majorly improved on power draw as well.

Re: Is there a current laptop that you are VERY excited about?
I probably won't get truly excited unless I see SXGA+ on an under 15" notebook. I do like the T440(s). As much as my X220i is a great notebook, I probably don't really need an ultraportable. A 14" with a mSATA and hard drive is probably be a better fit for me. I'm not sure about the new integrated pointstick buttons either. I may think it's great or I might not, but I'm definitely not spending $1,000 to find out, then pay the restocking fee if I don't, though I'm definitely down with the HD+ IPS and light weight.

Re: Is there a current laptop that you are VERY excited about?
The Helix really does it for me.
But, if were adding things to existing hardware.
I would like a Helix, with 2 mSATA slots. One of them in the tablet and the other in the dock.
Personally, I really really want a hybrid laptop/tablet. Now if it could run Windows and Android side by side at the same time, with all hardware functional and available to both OS's, then, then I would be happy. I want full handwriting and speech recognition. I want my email synced. So if I make a change in outlook (which is liked to my gmail), I expect a change in the gmail app.
Ethernet is a must.
Pen is a must.
Quad Core is a must.
Pen is a must.
Wifi and 4g, gotta have those also.
8 hour battery life with wifi, bluetooth, gps and 75% screen brightness. Bring it, or go home.
This is what I want.
I will pay 3k. (Well my clients will, but still the same as I'd get one too).
But since I can't have that yet, a Helix will do nicely.

Re: Is there a current laptop that you are VERY excited abou
Wow, I had completely forgotten this thread! Half a year after my original post, I actually bought a Sony Pro13 and on the whole it is as good as I expected: weight (fantastic), build quality (decent), keyboard quality (acceptable), looks (very sexy), performance (good), touchscreen (useful). One thing turned out to be even better than expected, namely, the high pixel density is very usable without adjusting Windows' scaling. I wouldn't call it comfortable, but it is certainly better than "tolerable". On the other hand, the clickpad is a disappointment. I often need to click several times before the click goes through. Even worse, there was a one-week period when the mouse pointer jumped all over the place, though that problem went away on its own. Perhaps the humidity was unusually high that week? I also wish the charger were smaller. It's actually quite small, but knowing how good Sony was at miniaturization, I thought it would be smaller.pianowizard wrote:In fact, I haven't been so excited about a new model since Lenovo's announcement of the X300 Thinkpad over 6 years ago.

Re: Is there a current laptop that you are VERY excited abou
Minus the Helix that I mentioned earlier, there is no new laptop on the horizon that gets my motor running.
That being said, I've been using my Precision M4400 more often and I had forgotten for a bit what a truly wonderful machine it is. So I am looking at a few choice upgrades for her along these lines
QX9100
8GB DDR2 RAM
1440x1280 LCD
320GB Samsung EVO SSD
The DDR2 SODIMMS will cost me as much as the SSD or more, but once you've had 8 or 16GB it's hard to go back to 4GB which is what I am using right now.
Between the M4400 and the T410 I am good on laptops for the forseeable future. I've even shelved my D630. I might sell it soon just to get it on someone's hands who want's to use it.

Google Chromebook Pixel, but only for the tall screen: 12.85in, 2560x1700 pixels, 3:2 = 16:10.7 ratio.
Unfortunately, the keyboard is garbage, and it can only be hacked to run Linux.

Is there a current laptop that you are VERY excited about?
To the extent that I earlier used to be exited about Thinkpad laptops, as they evolved through the 770 series, later T and W-series, the answer is no. The Helix, also mentioned above, could be interesting from the fact that it combines a tablet and laptop, but I have never used a Windows based tablet enough to know if I would be happy with using Windows touch based. But it looks ok, does to some extent excite me, and is on my list of tech I might buy one day.
So to the extent newer laptops excite me, it must be something specialized, with no compromises made, like the Getac server mentioned above. I have never seen anything like that before, except from similarity to lethal weapons spotted on a Romulan battle cruiser.

I have actually seen one in hands of one Pentagon employee and was drooling for the next 2 hours... How is this for an excitement for you?Norway Pad wrote:So to the extent newer laptops excite me, it must be something specialized, with no compromises made, like the Getac server mentioned above. P.S. I live 20 minutes walking distance from Pentagon and see some quite new and weird things almost every day

The Getac looks like the Dell Latitude rugged series, the low end running around $1600.00

The new Latitude 12 E7250, or 14 E7450 look nice as does the XPS 13.
