screen goes blank after win 7 splash screen - T42

While attempting to connect an external monitor to the DVI port on the 2878(?) dock, got no picture, monitor "going to sleep". Tried Fn-F7 to switch between LCD and monitor, still no picture. Tried to boot up without external monitor and LCD blanked out after Win 7 splash screen. I am able to enter BIOS, tried changing display settings, then applied default settings, still nothing. Safe Mode is working.

After restoring from a previous backup image, it works OK. Haven't tried the external monitor yet. Are there any other settings that might have cured this? I've never had a need to use an external monitor before, so never had this problem.

The driver is ATI Radeon 7500 XDDM ver 6.14.10.6606
