Dead fan in T42p?

#1 Post by Non-Thinker » Wed Jun 12, 2013 4:49 pm

My T42p kept stopping with an overheat/fan notice, so I tore it all apart and vacuumed out all the dust, but the fan still just doesn't move when I power it up again. Is my fan dead? If so, where can I buy another one? I'm OK with unscrewing and screwing things, but I wouldn't want to get into any really hairy installation, like anything involving soldering, so I'm wondering just how hard it might be to do a replacement.

Thanks for any help!

Replacing fan on a T4x is quite easy. You'll need to remove the keyboard and the palmrest to access the fan.

On feebay, look for FRU 13R2657 - that's the M10 long fan for your machine.

And be sure to have some Artic Silver, or similar, thermal paste ready when you do the job. You'll need to clean any old (probably dried up) paste of the CPU, and apply fresh.
