Bad Hard Drive

#1 Post by asiafish » Sun May 08, 2005 2:10 pm

Wow, after using my T42p (GVU) for a month, I ran CHKDSK and it reported back that I had over 8000 bad clusters. I ran the utility after some file copies had failed due to "Cyclic Redundancy Error".

So I restored my system to factory settings (after a full backup) and ran CHKDSK again, and sure enough, same 8000+ bad clusters.

IBM is sending me a new drive, but what a PITA.

Open a command shell and type in
CHKDSK /F

Without the /F any corrections will not be written to disk. After doing this, re-boot your computer.

During the reboot, CHKDSK will be run before Windows starts. After that, your problems should be gone.

No, after doing that the clusters are just mapped and Windows will avoid them. This is a brand new computer with a brand new drive, I will not settle for bad clusters even if Windows can be trained to ignore them.

I think you should get it replaced too. There's no reason to stand for that on a new drive. Hell even if a drive is under warranty and it starts getting errors or warnings on monitor programs I may RMA it (Most definitely if errors, SMART can be wrong).

For your replacement, I hope you don't get a refurbished drive, but often that's what they are.

I would call them and demand a new drive since you've had this brand new computer less than xx days. Whatever the return period is I suppose.

err now that I look you say you've had it for a month, might be tricky. Still worth a shot, thats giving errors way too soon.

Its not a problem, I insisted on a new drive and that is what I was promised. If a refurb comes, I'll send it right back and demand NEW.
