Replacing motherboard question

#1 Post by bard_9 » Fri Jul 05, 2013 2:07 pm

I have a X32 with a dead motherboard. I have a replacement on its way (same FRU), but I see in the service manual I need to use the Hardware Maintenance Diskette to change the serial number in the bios when I swap it.

I know this is a well worn topic, but my question is what functionality if any will I be losing if I do not have this diskette and do not change the serial number? Is it just the ability to use the IBM update program? I have never really used that anyway and have done manual updates of drivers in the past.

I am concerned my laptop will not be fully functional.

Thanks

Serial # on such an old laptop is basically irrelevant.
Lenovo-updates are actually made based upon the TYPE-MODEL, such as e.g. 2885-6WU.
Since all X32 have virtually the same specs where it matters, you will be fine.
You can change TYPE, MOD and S/N if you like, but it's not really necessary.
