Thinkpad T440s Ultrabook up on Lenovo website?

#1 Post by emeraldgirl08 » Mon Jul 08, 2013 10:26 am

Here is the link to the T440s Ultrabook and its features. Sure to draw either praise or criticism...or a bit of both 8)

UPDATE:

Looks like Lenovo removed the original site (linked above) for the T440s. That does not mean there are other T440s details elsewhere

No touchpad buttons either. They should call that thing a T440u.

Thumbs up for the LCD.

Thumbs down for the keyboard/touchpad.

Well.. not to be harsh - but i think we should wait by judging the bottonless trackpoint until we have tried it. But im curious too....

Space between the F-keys. Good job.

FHD and IPS screens. Good job

2 batteries for hotswap - THAT is very, very interesting. But only 3 cells :-(

No listed thoughts;

Seems like they are harder to service

No sign of dedicated Graphics :-(

They didn't mention the ultrabay. I really, really hope they forgot. (EDIT; Ok, they listed the USB-DVD in the accesories, so no ultrabay. Im looking forward to see the T440)

I would agree, but it was a bit of a off the top of my head reaction.

If you actually look at the picture:

Image

you can see a lip between the touch pad and the keyboard, that might feel like a trackpoint button, but I'd like to try it before committing.

I'm all for IPS, but I think FHD might be too small for me. The poor return policy would make me shy away from trying one, especially if it's big bucks.

You can set the screen to show 150%, then it shouldn't be too bad. (or just be in denmark - 14 days return)

But the thing about the touchpad seems interesting indeed.. I think it might Work.

IPS display with FHD resolution is a good move but still useless without proper keyboard layout.

On the other hand it kills X1 Carbon now because of the display quality and resolution.

I am still wondering what will be the real availability. Dell had already announced 15" IPS displays but after a short time it was cancelled.

I guess that competition will offer the same displays in 14" models as well and there will be shortage of these Lenovo-loved TN craps that Lenovo basically does not have a chance to use worse displays (good for customers) even though they would prefer it for sure.

while I'm no fan of the button less track point if the price is right on this I'm buying. I currently have a W530 and have been looking for something a little lighter for hauling around and this just may fit the bill. I've been eying the T430s but with the FHD display on this new model and the hot swap battery I'm in.

As I have said numerous times, FHD is perfect for 14.* inch screens, and I was really excited about this T440s, until I saw the weight: "starting at 3.6 lbs". Sigh, my next laptop is still going to be the Sony Vaio Pro 13.

I am wondering if the 14.1" IPS is actually available.
Looking at the port connection, I can not find the docking port. Also I wish to have fullsize Display port instead of Mini DP.

Well, everyone's talked about most of the things that bug me. But why no indicator lights? I frequently look at them on my current Thinkpad... and they're USEFUL.

At least this one looks like it's black and not grey. But the logo is flipped over weird.

I could probably deal with the touchpad button-thing. Although I'd be happiest if they just left off the touchpad (most people that tries to use my X200t are always so perplexed...)

I also wondered about that! Hope they include it at some point before they actually start selling the T440s. It certainly helps to have the indicator when troubleshooting.

I am also very curious about the non-s series of T440 and the T540 now as well. If the T440 is IPS I wonder if the T540/W540 could have an IPS version as well? Also if the T540/W540 version goes IPS I wonder how much more costly versions with FHD, IPS, and a high color gamut screen might be? I could be wrong but from what I know the only high color gamut IPS is the DreamColor (?) screen used in the HP Elitebooks (?) and IIRC those cost a pretty penny.

A little disappointed to see the chiclet keyboard. But I guess the old style one will never come back, oh well. I had a chiclet style keyboard on my X130e and I actually liked it just fine. I use one of the new style Apple extended USB keyboards on my PC so I suppose it'll be fine.

Very excited to finally see IPS though. I think I will be buying one of these when they come out for that reason :)

Now if only I could get it with no touchpad at all! Trackpoint only! Buttonless trackpad was annoying on the X130e, but that's only because it was stupid how it rolled off at the end so there was no way to click the button without making the cursor fly around. If they got over that issue I'll be fine with no trackpad buttons. Then again in all my ThinkPads with a trackpad I switch it to "scroll only".

IMO I like the no indicator lights thing. I see how they're useful but they can be annoying too. Of course I understand your point if part of the ThinkPad allure is those indicator lights... but I feel, like with the old style keyboards, those are becoming more of a passé thing for Lenovo...

a few years back I bought an HP DV7 pavillion and it had the crazy touchpad with no buttons. Besides looking pretty it was functionally useless. The physical buttons were under the pad and would "click" if pressed, but this made it nearly impossible to do tasks as simple as dragging and dropping files. My only option was to tweak the driver so the one click was the same as clickng and holding and a second (slow) click would release, or of course using an external mouse.

I loved the laptop otherwise but after getting a year or two of use out of it, I sold it to a friend. If I had known the ultrabooks were so much better I would never have ordered the pavillion, but as for this thinkpad, as much as I'd love a nice IPS screen, I'd never buy any laptop without mouse buttons again.

The T430s weighs 3.9 lbs. They shaved off .3 lbs. Of all the reasons not to get the T440s. As others have noted, it is incorrectly labeled as an ultrabook, when in fact it was never intended for that class.

I was not comparing it with its predecessor. I was comparing it with the laptop that I plan to buy next, the Sony Pro 13 which weighs only 2.34 lbs, despite having a touchscreen (which typically adds ~0.3 lbs). BTW, the T440s' starting weight of 3.6 lbs almost certainly refers to a configuration with a 1600x900 TN screen that's non-touchscreen. A unit with a FHD IPS touchscreen would weigh more, probably around 4 lbs, a whopping 1.6 to 1.7 lbs more than the Sony Pro 13.

I don't care whether it's called an ultrabook or thin-and-light or whatever. If it's too heavy for me, it's too heavy for me. I know what I need, and none of Lenovo's current laptops meet my needs.

Personally I'm just hoping the T440s is one among many other soon-to-come ThinkPad models and was the only one accidentally put live for a short time - I'm just hoping we'll see a Haswell Thinkpad with a proper trackpad and real keyboard!
