New T43 Fan pulsates

#1 Post by Photios » Mon May 09, 2005 10:44 am

I just recently purchased a T43. I really like the computer, except for one thing, the fan. I can get used to the fan being on all the time. The problem is that it pulsates, and is just annoying. I hear a soft woosh for about 2 seconds (kind of like the ocean) and then a rraaeerr sound for less than a second, which goes back to the woosh. This process repeats itself the entire time the computer is on.

Anyone else have a smiliar experience with their T43 or even a T42?

Next person to post a fan 'issue' dies. Really.

I know... I really hated doing it. However, I have not seen anyone talk about a 'pulsating' fan. Geez. I just called PC Connection, and they're going to take it back. Pretty big of them. The pulsating noise was just really nauseating!

To Steve007:
... you can call me Blofeld or better Dr. No - if its easier for you then...
... great service. a $2k unit and dying included ...
... the famous "well thought through"-thingy --- CR and Product Management cares about everything... isn't it?
-----

To Photios:
Do you still have the T43 unit?
Would it be possible for you to make a recording of
the pulsating fan noise and
specify the exact model no. of your T43?
The best would be to publish it on some private web site
and post a link here.

IMO
this is quite interesting that we continue to hear about irritating fan noises,
considering the fact that it is being reported by Thinkpad owners
since Jan 2004.

For my unit, I changed the fan to a "long fan M10", which reduced the pulsating fan noise down to nearly inaudible.

Cheers

I still have the machine. I'm totally bummed about the whole thing. I really like the comptuer and want to keep it. I don't mind the fan noise, it's just that pulsating that gets to me. Is the pulsating a funciton of the current changing or is it purely the mechanics of the fan? If I could get IBM to fix the fan, I'd be happy. Unfortunately, I'd have to send it in for them to look at it, and I'm afraid they'd just tell me it's within spec - or - they would swap out the fan, and the problem would repeat itself.

As for getting a good recording of the sound, hmmm, I'll have to get a mic to do that.

I think a discussion about the T43 fan issue is entirely appropriate. I for one want to know about this. I would not and do not want a notebook with a fan running when it's only doing basic things, when it shouldn't be necessary. Sounds like something's not quite right in this area.

I totally agree. I have owned one T43 for 20 days and it really a lot noisy when I am in the library. I returned it anyway.

Considering that this problem has been known for at least 18 months, and considering that IBM did practically nothing to fix the problem, I think the complaint is more than valid. My T40 still "ticks" every 30 seconds or so, and the fan stays on constantly unless the WiFi is turned off. Not really a problem in most of the areas I work in, but in a quiet room it is pretty irritating.

If Lenovo can fix the [censored] fans it would buy them some credibility, at least with me :)

But how many different discussions do we have to have going at one time about it?

So pick the most useful of the multiple fan threads, make it a sticky, tell everyone to use that one and let's agree to start locking new ones.

fan noise

#14 Post by jarbill » Mon May 09, 2005 10:02 pm

As a newcomer, can you fill me in on the fan issue? I'm looking to buy a T42, but the main reason I'm looking at IBM's this time is that I'm currently using a different brand computer in a courtroom environment and the fan stays on nearly all the time, and it's so loud that it's actually distracting, so if the IBM's are doing the same thing, that wouldn't be an improvement at all, just an added expense. If it's something that can be fixed without too much trouble, I don't mind doing that; I just don't want to spend the money to basically maintain the status quo.
