UltraPort on A31p
Is it possible that my a31p does NOT have the ultraport? It has the space on top but i can't seem to open it up. I bought the Camera but can't seem to get the port open. Any ideas?
Thanks
Jack

It does come out, just takes some work. My T22 was the same way, but once that plastic piece comes out, the port is there.

I don't know about the camera, but the Compact Flash reader that I used on my T22 came with its own cover, made of metal, with a flip open door to access the port and plug in the reader. When not using the reader, you would close the door to protect the port.
I didn't care for this solution as the door and its surrounding bezel and hinge protruded about 2mm abouce the edge of the screen housing and the door would flop open on its own (no latch).

Camera Mount
The IBM Ultraport camera mount is kinda cheap. Mine broke after about two weeks. I know another user on here made his own mount by drilling two holes in the camera. I think I might try it - because having a camera is great - but not one that falls off.
check out my a31p with two ultraports, one for the camara and the other one for the microphone..

Re: Camera Mount
Indeed yes, Ultraport mount on A31p is rather fragile, never try to open lid by pulling Ultraport device... In other words handle it with care and it will last.a31pguy wrote:The IBM Ultraport camera mount is kinda cheap. Mine broke after about two weeks. Hi a31pGuy,
haven't seen your posts recently, glad to see you are still in the A31p series .. I have two, each w DockII, and maxed out - mega/giga and all that. (Still puzzling on how to move to the next external display like SAMSUNG SyncMaster 305T at 2,560-by-1,600 -- and video card for dual DVI)
The Ultraport camera option ... when initially available, did not have much to commend it as I recall, so now I have accumulated various 1394 and USB models, with very little use of them. What has changed on the UltraPort model?
Also, I have scanned the A31p accessories/options on the Lenovo site .. and the only camera is a Lenovo clip-on type ... not UltraPort. So where do the Ultraport come from today? And what is the nomenclature for them?

Ultraport Camera II is discontinued, here is site at Lenovo. For what is Ultraport Camera was way overpriced back in its times, cca 100 USD.FrankK-F wrote: Also, I have scanned the A31p accessories/options on the Lenovo site .. and the only camera is a Lenovo clip-on type ... not UltraPort. Nowadays you may find 'em from time to time at ebay. If you shopping at ebay make sure that comes with all adapters if you want use Ultraport, othervise it can be used via USB port.
Then you don't have an ultraport. On an A31P the ultraport has a rubber cover which comes out easy. Not all A31P's came with one.jack NYC wrote:no its not rubberized its hard plastic
How did the other guy get 2 ultraports on a A31P? I know an ultraport is just a custom USB port, but how do you wire in a second port? Must have wired in a small usb hub first.
But if you have a 15" screen the metal support for the screen will get in the way on the side of the screen. Not much room to work with on the sides of the screens.

My guess would be that a custom drilling job on the lid, coupled with an extra lcd ribbon cable (containing the Ultraport connector) and some soldering to either the existing USB port or perhaps even to the Intel southbridge chip itself, was used to construct the second port. A nice engineering job from the looks of it.
