This involves a Dell.
The computer worked fine. Then it was unplugged and moved and unused for several weeks. When I set it back up, it booted for a little bit, but then very suddenly crashed.
Now I can't access the hard drive it won't boot from windows. I can get the computer to boot from the cd-rom drive using Fedora. But again I can't access the hard drive I get an error message from fedora and it says the drive is improperly mounted. I have tried plugging the hard drive into other outlets on the motherboard and the same thing happens. I even tried switching the SATA cables, since I know the one on the cd-rom drive must work. The Drive still won't boot from my computer. However I just plugged the hard drive into the motherboard on my friend's computer, and I have no problems accessing the hard drive. All of the data is there and intact. So now I'm worried it might be a motherboard problem even though the computer boots just fine in Fedora. What does everyone think?
I get the following error message (any tips on how to follow the instructions if I can't get the thing to boot? Although, actually, I think I'll do all that from my friend's computer):
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent harm to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
these steps:
Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive and make sure it is properly configured and terminated.
Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Re: Non ThinkPad Hardware question
I would check the SATA settings in the BIOS. Look for AHCI and change it then try again.
