I believe you will also need a display port to HDMI converter. I'm not sure about audio being carried over after the conversion.

Yes.

There are HDMI/Displayport cables, if you don't want to buy an adapter plus an HDMI cable.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

This is a much better option than a Displayport/HDMI adaptor! Many such adaptors don't pass through audio! (Speaking from experience, anyway.)

That is an HDMI-to-HDMI cable, not HDMI-to-DP. I haven't used any HDMI-to-DP cables and so I don't know which ones would be good. All my HDMI-to-HDMI cables are ultra cheap (~$1 each) and they all work fine.

I believe digital signals degrade less than analog signals over long distances.

You may need to do the following, per the note (below) I saw somewhere:

Additional info. For me (as mentioned in the comments below), in order to send the audio through the HDMI cable, you will need to get into the "sound and Audio devices" of the control panel and change the sound playback Default Device to the displayport cable. If you don't the sound will come out the laptop speakers or whatever speakers you have hooked up to the laptop.
