T42p Bezel Lights don't light

#1 Post by 1adam12 » Sun Jul 14, 2013 11:33 am

I just acquired a T42p Type 2373-HVU running Win7 and all seems fine except the icon lights at the bottom of the screen bezel (Num Lock, Cap Lock, Hard Drive, Bat/AC, etc) don't light up. What's weird is the WiFi light does light and seems to work normally!

Any assistance and/or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Probably a poorly connected (or a bad) inverter.

Well then...My next question is...Is an inverter difficult to replace and would an inverter from a T42 (not a T42p) Type 2373 work? They are both 15" displays. The T42 is dead but I believe the icon lights worked before it died.
Thanks!

Replacing an inverter is easy.

That being said, if your T42 has a XGA LCD, the inverter is different. It will work for testing purposes, but it should be replaced by a proper one for optimal performance.

All aspects of "how to" can be found in the HMM:

You might also be looking at a blown fuse on the motherboard, let's hope that's not the case.

Good luck.

Is there any way to identify the type of display (LCD) of the machine?
Thanks.

What's the type number of the dead T42? You can punch the number into "Quick Path" and find the system specs.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

In order to replace the inverter, do I need to remove the display from the bottom of the laptop or can I just remove the bezel from around the display and replace the inverter without having to disassemble the laptop?
Thanks.

Just the bezel. In fact you don't even have to completely remove the bezel. You can just remove the three screws across the bottom, swing the bezel up and replace the inverter without detaching it from the top edge.
