Return T42 (2373 M3U) or Work Out The Problems

#1 Post by hotwheels » Mon May 09, 2005 12:13 pm

I am at day 29 of the 30 day return policy. The CD/DVD failed to open a couple of weeks ago and a new one was sent. The modem and bluetooth failed to operate last week. Called Service on the modem problem (they are sending a new card) and they suggested returning the machine within the 30days and trying again.

It takes a while to set up a new machine and time is short in a busy work schedule. I am thinking of just working through the problems with this machine, but if this is just a troublesome T42 then maybe I will have more prolems to work through and more lost time.

I would probably get another T42 2373 M3U -- it is light, fast enough for me and the 60 gig drive is plenty of storage. But I might look at a T43 ...

Looking for opinions from others who may have had similar situations...

RETURN IT

I believe that if you have a machine that functions improperly for any reason within the first 30 days it is important to return it. Failure so early on is indicative that the machine is likely a lemon.

If you fix it now, you will regret it when it gives problems down the line. (I've had a laptop that did that to me...it was a Dell, but it drove me nuts).

T42 2373M3U discontinued?

#4 Post by Esteban » Mon May 09, 2005 5:11 pm

If you return yours can you get a new M3U? The M3U may be a discontinued model. I tried finding it today on the Lenovo Thinkpad website using the Fast Access box. It wasn't found. A resulting web page said "Our Apologies" and "Unfortunately, the part number you entered cannot be found"

I tried another model, 2378FVU, as a part number and it worked fine.

As I understand the 30 day guarantee it has to be received by (IBM) Lenovo within the 30 days. I glanced at their return policy a week or so ago and think there's a 15% restocking fee for returns past 30 days.

Food for your thought.

I'm pleased I bought a M3U from IBM a few months back. It has all the features I wanted, and more.

I am buying this through the EPP program and I checked with them this morning and I can get the M3U. So, they are available. And, the price has gone down about a 100 since I bought the machine.

I do have a 60gig dirve I put in the ultra slim bay for a backup so I will image the onboard drive to the spare drive then return this machine for another one. It is a very nice machine, light, powerful, and seems to meet my needs.

Thanks for the input.

If it was a system board problem or something with the case plastics I would send it back, but cards and the like, which are removeable compenents, aren't likely indicative of the computer itself, just of the card.

My T42p is getting a new hard drive tomorrow (better arrive tomorrow), but otherwise the machine is perfect. It would not only be a waste of time to send the whole computer, but an abuse of IBM's warranty to return as defective a machine that is not defective. The hard drive is defective, and so the hard drive will be replaced.

What I guess I'm saying is that if your M3U is otherwise stable and reliable, with no dead pixels and a defect-free case, why tempt fate and the gods of shipping and manufacture? I'd keep it and have the part swapped out. Any other parts that go South down the line (can happen on a replacement machine just as easily) will be replaced quickly and without complaint by IBM.

In the event the machine is problematic, IBM still stands behind it. I had a T20 that ate system boards every six weeks or so (a heat issue, I think), and on the fourth warranty call, I was escalated to customer relations and offered a new T22, which I accepted and then used happily for four or five years.

Here's to hoping that Lenovo maintains the same excellent service.
