Hello Friends,
I am new here. Just joined this because of a problem I recently had. Mine is T42. And the problem is; the laptop turns on but the display goes off in a few seconds. The display appears just once for short time after a long break. Like, If I turned the laptop on after few hours it will show the display for few seconds and then blacks out. But few minutes ago, I plugged the VGA cable to see on my external monitor it worked in both screens here and there for about a minute, I entered the password as well but didn't get to see the desktop, it blacked out in both screens. But the other parts work nicely. I can hear the windows start up sound and USB plugged sounds. This thing is with the display only.
I saw people talking about screen inverter. Is that it??
Help me!! Thanks in advance

Re: IBM T42 Display Problem
I'm afraid it's a lot more than that.
The T40/T41T42 has been known for severe graphics and other hardware problems.
Your description points to a loose ATI graphics chip (GPU).
The only way to properly correct this, is to have the GPU reballed.
If you can find someone to reball the GPU, ask them to reball the Southbridge (big Intel chip under the wifi card) as well.
Failing that, a reflow might do it, but this usually lasts for only a few weeks/months (if you are lucky).
Your best bet is a replacement motherboard.

Re: IBM T42 Display Problem
Thanks for the reply. Can you tell me more about this. I want to give a try. I've already checked the internal parts by opening the covers and the keyboard. Did you mean that I should take out the Graphics ship and re insert it again? Wow! this thing blows my mind!
Thanks!!
Thanks!!

You can't just take the graphics chip out since it's soldered to the motherboard...
That's why re-balling is called for, and it's done with professional equipment...
