Gobi 4000/MC7750 in non-thinkpad device

#1 Post by sathackr » Wed Jul 17, 2013 11:03 pm

So it seems most people are trying to use non-lenovo WWAN cards in Lenovo devices. I'm trying to do the opposite.

I have a gaggle of Dell Lattitude laptops, and an Ideapad Y560.

I purchased a Lenovo Gobi 4000 MC7750 (Lenovo P/N 0B42409 FRU PN 04W3791)

The device is labeled "Sierra Wireless | AirPrime"
It throws 4 devices into the device manager.
Hardware IDs are: Vid_114f&Pid_68a2&MI_00/02/03/08

I've tried this card in the IdeaPad Y560, a Dell Lattitude E6510, E6530. I've previously used a Sierra Wireless 3g card in the Ideapad without issue.

I've tried drivers from Panasonic, Sony, Lenovo, and Verizon (vzam.net.)

It seems no matter what I do, I get a "Device Cannot Start (Code 10)" on device manager.

Since this is a Lenovo branded card and ya'll seem to have a knack for making things work when they're not supposed to I figured I would post here and see if you have any suggestions.

Thank you :)

Welcome to the forum.
Usually taping pin 20 will do the trick.

Thank you for the quick response.

I read the two threads you linked but they seem to be related to the device not appearing in device manager at all. I tried it anyways with no success, device still shows up with code 10 (see screenshot below)

That card is meant for a Lenovo Business machine, like a T4xx or T5xx etc., not for a Dell or a Lenovo consumer laptop!
Try temporarily removing all those other network adapters, you seem to have an overload of unidentified objects.
This is a Thinkpad forum, so maybe you should go to a Dell forum instead?

Lattitude laptops are Dell's *Business* line.

But I fail to see what denotes a "business" vs a "consumer" product in actual hardware compatibility -- it's just a USB interface.

I could try a dell forum but I see you guys hacking up BIOS, drivers, etc to make these cards work in laptops they weren't designed for so -- dell just lets you install anything so all you have on there forums is a bunch of 'hurr durr wut antifreez shud i use on mah aleinwear labtop so i can git more FPS????" people. I figured I'd have much better luck getting intelligent assistance here.

As for the extraneous network adapters/hardware...I get the same results in 2 other laptops, one is a Lenovo, so I doubt it's the proliferation of network adapters (thanks to VMWare...) in the screenshot.

I should add, my ultimate goal is to make this card work in a Thinkpad Tablet 2 or Latitude 10 tablet. Any tablet running win8 pro really...

I can find neither available with a Verizon 4G LTE card so I ordered this one. I'm trying it in the laptops first before I spend $800 on a tablet. My first goal was to make it work in win7. Then win8. If I can make it work in win8 then I'm sure I can make it work in one of the tablets.

I'm well aware of the dummies that crowd the Dell and HP forums.
