T60p not switiching on after overheating

#1 Post by analogsoul » Fri Jul 19, 2013 5:28 am

Hello there -

I've had a few problems with overheating : my T60p kept shutting down when it got too hot. This time it won't switch on again. It's plugged into the mains, but the battery and mains lights don't come on

Any thoughts? Is there anything I can do, or have we come to the end?

All best, Richard

When a laptop overheats, normally the thermal paste between CPU and cooler has to be replaced, and/or the fan needs to be cleaned out from all the dust bunnies.
Not doing anything about such a situation is a serious shortcoming.
Since you have waited until the machine finally has given up the ghost, you are almost certainly too late.
Try the above, or get a new motherboard, or get another laptop.

When your laptop reaches dangerous temperature it will shut down to prevent damage. As RBS mentioned, this can usually be resolved with some very inexpensive maintenance, however if the problem is ignored the heat will eventually destroy the system board. If you're not even getting any led lights and no actions at all when attempting to power on, then you probably do need a new system board. Luckily these boards are available here in the forum from myself, and I also believe RBS may have a one too. I have boards ranging from $39 to $79, or if you want to increase your performance we could discuss upgrading to a T61 board that will allow for increase of max ram from 3gb to 8gb, max cpu from 2.33 to 2.8ghz, and max harddrive speed from 1.5gb/s to 3.0gb/s. You can also consider modifying your cooling system with a T61p style heatsink that will provide substantial benefits in cooling, or at very least I'd replace your fan and when the laptop is fixed, make sure you monitor the temps so you can avoid frying another system board.
