Dear thinkpad users,
I tried cloning my old 500Gb hard drive to a 750Gb Momentux TX hybrid hard drive using Acronis True Image, but it failed. My computer and another thinkpad computer cannot recognize my new HDD after the cloning process, and I have to return it to the seller. The process of cloning is as follows.
I used the "resize partitions while cloning" option and pluged in my new HDD as an external USB HDD, and watched the computer restarting and starting cloning checks. I selected the option that "shut down computer once finished". I did not know what happened after then, because I went to have lunch for around 45 min. When I came back, the computer has already been restarting. The computer paused at the "Starting Windows" stage while my new HDD was plugged in a USB slot. I guess there might be a conflict due to the fact that two HDDs are identical. So, I unplugged the new HDD, my computer then was able to continue to boot into Windows 7. When I plugged in my new HDD into a USB slot to check if the clone has been finished. Unfortunately, I found that my computer cannot recognize it anymore. No signs to show there is another HDD plugged in, it neither visible in the Disk Management window even it was plugged in there. After that, I exchanged the new HDD to be the internal HDD, and booted. It was neither recognized by the computer. There was an error message showing that HDD 2110 error--HDD cannot be read or something like that. I checked the Thinkpad X200 tablet manual to identify the meaning of the error, from which I think there are two possibilities:
1. my USB hard drive holder to the new HDD does not has a power supply, and I only plugged in one USB input for the external USB hard drive holder. There may be a short of power because I did not use two USB branches to supply the power for the new HDD during the clone process.
2. The new HDD has an unmatched data rate with my USB HDD holder. I used a USB 2.0 channel, but the HDD has a 6Gb/s transmission speed. I may need to reset the jumper to make it work...
I tried several ways to fix the HDD, but no luck. I will have a replaced 750Gb Momentus XT hard drive next week, and will have to clone the old hard drive again. So, please give me some advice before I do it. Thanks.
PS: some people may suggest me backup the old drive and then restore it to the new hard drive, but this is not my top choice--because I may not be able to find another large enough hard drive for the backup process.
