To change TrackPoint to Touchpad in Lenovo R60e

#1 Post by Felloni » Sat Jul 27, 2013 1:44 pm

Friends,

I buy a NoteBook a 3rd hand (Lenovo R60e)
How was the first time I laid my hands on a Note, and lack of experience, do not I heed a detail that is important to me:
TrackPoint vs. TouchPad.
What I bought only has the TrackPoint and TouchPad seems to me to be more functional, I have seen physical problem in his right hand.

Ask (see photo mounted: http://www.imageshack.com/scaled/large/163/06o6.jpg) if it is possible to adapt a touchpad model R60 (which has the TP) which is in my R60e (which only has TPoint) since they are almost twins brothers models.
It would be possible to buy the part that has the TPad (R60) and replace the part of the R60e?
Grateful for whoever can answer.

Welcome to thinkpads.com Felloni!

Yes, it is possible to fit the palm rest from a R60 onto the R60e, many (most?) R60e models came from the factory with a touch pad equipped palm rest anyway. Might be a good idea to loosen the palm rest on your machine and make sure the motherboard has the necessary connector for a touch pad before buying the part.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

Thanks Neil,
I'll check the connector to palm rest.

It is my understanding that this is incorrect and no R60e has a touch pad or the connector for the touch pad. The only way to do it is to swap in a R60 motherboard, which has the connector.

ZaZ may well be correct about this...I must have had in mind the entire R60 line and not just the "e" model. Never having owned an "e", I don't know, and haven't been able to find enough info to tell. So now, more than ever, it would be best to check the motherboard for a connector before you proceed.

We want the opposite, T60 WITHOUT trackpads, but unfortunately that is NOT possible.

Every ThinkPad should have a trackpadless palm rest option, my opinion of course.

This makes me laugh. It reminds me times when a friend or peer attempts to use my X200T. As you know the X200T does not have a touchpad so they resort to rubbing the trackpoint as if it were a tiny and circular touchpad. I tell them to bear down on the trackpoint with their finger and push to move the cursor. They usually give up in frustration :D

It is possible transforming an old palm rest with touchpad in a touchpad USB?
In www.ErgoTouchpad.com there are interesting things in matters of touchpad.
But for me, it is not possible to buy, because it will cost me 200% import. In my country his is true, believe me.

I've heard that before. What about a used R60 board? If money is tight, probably the best option would be to learn to use the stick. It's better than any touch pad in my opinion, but not everyone takes to it right away. Some people need time to get used it, but can be a great fit if you're willing to put in the time.
