T61p Quadro FX 570M - bug free?

#1 Post by Lockheed » Sat Aug 03, 2013 4:13 pm

I want to advice my friend to buy t61p, however I already burnt myself twice on the infamous Nvidia bug.

Are T61s with Quadro FX 570M safe to buy, or do they have to be manufactured after 08/08 to be safe?
T420s - i7, 16GB RAM, Samsung 850 EVO + 1TB Hitachi 9.5mm, Nvidia, Oleh Bios.
W500 - C2D P9500, 8GB RAM, Samsung 830 SSD + 750GB Hitachi HDD, Intel+ATI GPU, bright WUXGA, FP-reader
Arch Linux, BTRFS+ZFS on LUKS

They have to be post 08/08 to be bug-free.

The boards from pre 08/08 can sometimes run a long time, but suddenly die. Noone knows why, or when. Sometimes they fail in a short period of time.

However the post-08/08 T61ps are often just as expensive as the cheap W500s - so i would suggest to take a look after the W500. Similar machines, except that the W500 takes the much cheaper DDR3 RAM, have switchable Graphics, supports SATA-II and 8 GB RAM natively, and generally have never hardware.
Thinkpad W500 (2.53 GHz P8700, 4 GB RAM, FireGL V5700, WUXGA)
Thinkpad T61F 14" (2.53 GHz QX9300, 6 GB RAM, Quadro FX570m 256 MB, SXGA). Advanced dock with AMD Radeon HD7750
Custom build ITX desktop (i5 4590, 8GB RAM, AMD R7 260X, custom watercooling)
Thinkpad 8, Fujitsu F-07C

FS: T61F
