SuperG and mini PCI
SuperG and mini PCI
Hi, I have some basic questions that I hope someone can help answer.
I am planning to get a thinkpad X40. I am considering adding the IBM brand 802.11 b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter to avoid external antenae while getting g networking.
At home, I have DSL and I used have a D-link router with superG in the pas (returned because of a variety of problems). So I need to get a wireless router and I'm debating between the DI-624 and the Linksys WRT54GS. Both have speed enhancement options. Can I access either superG (on the D-link) or the speedbooster feature on the Linksys with one of the wireless miniPCI cards for the X40?
Thanks in advance.

Re: SuperG and mini PCI
I wouldn't think so as they are normally proprietary standards (i know the dlink one is anyway) so you need to use their card to access them - you would still be able to access them with your b/g card but 'only' at 54Mbs. But it comes to the point that if using for DSL I would imagine your on 1Mbs max so unless using for other stuff (5+ machines, av streamers etc) you will never notice whether you were running at 2x speed or not. I always think you are better to stick to one of the defined standards anyway - and i would personally avoid a dlink router as they seem a bit flakey to me - i would go with just a standard g router from linksys or netgear
try the atheros client utility to enable the superg mode on the ibm minipci card
no need to install any drivers
read this:

this should work..

found another forum with direct download links und user comments:

i'm currently running the ibm drivers with the 3.1.1.50 Atheros Client Util w/o a problem!
My dualband minipci doesnt have any 802.11g compatibilty, not to mention superg
Actually i have set up an WGT624v2 netgear router/wlan ap with 802.11b and WPA PSK w/o a hassle.
the ibm access connection program wasnt running with wpa psk properly; i still got no connection until i have installed the atheros client util. now everything is fine execpt i have no turbo option (802.11a) for my a/b card.
but im quite sure that it works (got it work with the netgear a/b drivers..)

b/g Card?
Thanks for all your help. One final question: do you know whether the Atheros Utility will work with the IBM b/g card?
Right now, the only machine I can get has the b/g rather than a/b/g card, and I am not sure what chipset it uses.

Re: b/g Card?
As far as I know IBM b/g either uses the (Atheros) AR5004G or AR5001G chipset, so the Atheros Utility should work.

as far as i know, ibm uses the Intel PRO/Wireless 2200 BG Mini-PCI Adapter.
take look at:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4TP37K
in addition you can check the driver details. if you can see any kind of ar5xxx.sys driver, this should be an atheros based minipci.
btw: i have the dualband wifi atheros card using the ar5211 chipset and i can use the atheros drivers AND the wireless LED is still running AND IBM Access Connections works fine!
But i don't have the SuperG option provided by the atheros client utility.
I guess only the IBM a/b/g card will have this option available, although the dualband minipci is "turbomode compatible" -> 108 Mbit in 802.11a standard (SuperG for 802.11a called Turbomode).
I got this working quite a long time with the wab501 drivers for my t40p and an AP from netgear ( wab102 dualband 802.11a/802.11b)! (can't use access connections/LED) - very short range but high performance (35-40 Mbit/s and >1sec delay).

IBM X40 b/g cards
So I found out that the IBM b/g cards use ATHEROS AR5002G chipset. I've finally ordered my machine, and I'll update everyone on whether SuperG works with my DI-624 router.

hi pete
i mixed up several drivers and finally made it.
this static 108 mbit mode has been working for two days until i tried to find out how this could happen and since i have reinstalled the card i can't get this thing work anymore....
during the two days i made a few tests with netiq chariot 5.0.
hardware: t40p with a/b/g card + wgt624v2 from netgear
static 108 mbit w, w/o WPA
upload ~ 50 mbit
download ~40 mbit
the a/b/g card from ibm has an atheros AR 5212A chip.
i think until ibm doesnt provide any official support for 108 mbit you can save your money...unfortunately
