No more workstation ThinkPads?

#1 Post by SAD » Sun Aug 18, 2013 5:07 pm

Hi Folks,

Is there any truth to the rumor that Lenovo will no longer produce the W series ThinkPads? I do not mean are they going to rename the series, I mean are they getting out of the laptop workstation business?

If so I need to start looking elsewhere rather than waiting for the W540 or equivalent.

TIA,
Shane

Have not heard this rumor... where did the information come from? We have W520's at work and they are very nice machines (although too big for my tastes, I have a T420 myself).

I don't know if they are dropping mobile workstations or not, but with whats coming out of Lenovo these days, I don't really care.

It seems that the Dell Precision laptops are more ThinkPad like then the new Lenovo offerings.

Sadly there is truth to this. My next workstation type machine may be just that, a desktop and not a laptop. It's a shame because i like having a big external monitor (or two), a docking station with all the trimmings and the ability to eject it and go on the road.

Unless you have a real need for a mobile workstation I would stick to a desktop. They are a lot cheaper and much easier to fix if broken.

The stinking thing about the current W-series (W530) is it's castrated keyboard and it's stupid 16:9 display. Since display and keyboard used to be outstanding on Thinkpads, there isn't much left now besides the though housing.

My T61 from 2007 still functions (but it's slow and has very short battery life, even on good 7 cell battery), I hope my W520 (2012) lasts at least that long. At that time it's 2018. I hope that will be the last year I'll ever need a mobile workstation or that they have returned to proper keyboards by then.
