I've just bought a ssd samsung 840 for my Lenovo x220 and I'm wondering if move from win7 to win8 or not.
In terms of reliability and performance which is the better choice ?

Re: Upgrading from Win7 to Win8
Win8 should in theory provide a bit better performance. Reliability, however, depends not only on the OS, but also on applications and their compatibility. Something like the X220 which was tested and optimized for Win7, may be more reliable with Win7 running on top of it.
To me the key question in Win7 vs Win8 is the interface changes. There are a lot of things which Win8 does differently in terms of UI, and you may like it or dislike it.

Re: Upgrading from Win7 to Win8
If Lenovo supports the X220, I guess you could go for it if you won't mind losing Power Manager and stuff like that as we know it.
IMHO, I have a T400 with an SSD, and Windows 8 definitely had better performance. As for reliability, i'd say 8 was really solid, and so was 7 though.
I moved back to Windows 7 because I missed some Lenovo-specific stuff and because I broke my Windows 8 install with a partitioning mishap.

Re: Upgrading from Win7 to Win8
Anything Windows 7/vista and for that matter XP rated should work wonders with Windows 8. Long gone are the days of poor device support. I was actually shocked when I installed Windows 8 on a t61p and every single component worked out of the box. EVERYTHING. My guess is Windows truly learn from their mistakes on device support with Windows 7 because a lot of hardware is now fully supported by Windows 8.dr_st wrote:Win8 should in theory provide a bit better performance. Re: Upgrading from Win7 to Win8
Windows 8 pretty much works here on my X220. Still prefer Windows 7 though. See following for a couple of tips.
