Expresscard slot for T40? / Dock II PCI question

#1 Post by Arf the Lab » Sat Aug 24, 2013 5:06 am

I'd like to add a USB 3.0 Expresscard to my T40, but neither the T40 itself nor the Dock II have Expresscard slots. I know it's possible to add Expresscard support via USB, but it's no good for me as it would just run at 2.0 speeds.

Is it possible to add USB 3.0 support via the PCI slot in the Dock II? I don't want to buy the card to test until I know if it'll work or not, and at the correct speeds.

Thanks.

Maybe it's time to bury the T40 amongst the other bones in your backyard?
T43 was the first machine with an Expresscard slot.
PCI cards are there (not to be mixed up with PCIe).
But that dock would be useless for your purpose, because USB3.0 is faster than PCI can support.
You'd never get USB3.0 performance out of it.

Can you add a xHCI to your ThinkPad Dock? You can try. Let us know how it goes. Please leave ExpressCard out of the question, for it is a unnecessary complication. I would look for a genuine Lycom card.

Addonics model AD2U3PCI looks like Lycom UB-125, but Addonics support insist that they make their own cards, it is not made by Lycom. I think Addonics lies, I doubt they make these things, they almost certainly order it from a Taiwan or China ODM or OEM. I would avoid buying from Addonics, because the support person who replied to my questions seems dishonest.
