x40 problem with usb external cdrom

#1 Post by Panman » Wed May 11, 2005 9:16 am

Hi guys,

i just got a couple of days ago my new thinkpad x40. I connected an external usb cdrom i have and everything was ok and the system was booting from it. Then i tried to install windows from the begining but it seems that the first time that my computer boots to start windows for the first time and to continue with the install, my external cdrom it is not detected any more. It prompts for the location that a windows installation file is, but i cannot see my cdrom in the menu to choose it.

My conclusion is that the system does not have the dos drivers for my external cdrom. But it is strange cause i can boot from it which means that it can be detected in some way. However the second time that it boots again to continue with the installation of windows it doesn;t seem to be detected.

Now i don't have any operatin system and i am waiting for the recovery cds from IBM that seem to be very very late....!!

I would like to ask you if you have any suggestions on how i can recover my system. I didn't create any recovery backup before i did what i did.

Do you know if there are somewhere on the web available any images of ibm recovery cds??

regards,
pan

Pan, the recovery CDs are technically not necessary. You can press "Access IBM" at startup (when you see the IBM logo) and that gives you the option to reload the operating system. Before you do this, however, you should spend some time reading through past posts in all forums here re: recovering. Some very useful information can be found.

I think the issue you are having is with the USB drivers, not a DOS driver. I could be wrong.

Maybe someone knows how to (re)install USB drivers - wait and see if someone else responds to your post.

hi,

by pressing "Access IBM" when the pc boots i don't have the option to recover my system, which i think it should be with F11 key.
I only get ESC for normal boot, F1 for entering BIOS setup and F12 for choosing startup device.
I have the hidden partition in my hard disk but i didn't do any backup procedures so maybe that's why i cannot recover from it !?!
