...the 5K100 100GB was also launched in SEPTEMBER 04 and as of now (MAY 05) it is not available....let's hope we will not wait until 2006 for 7K100 to be available..

I am planning to upgrade my HDD by year's end and it will be either the 7200.1 or the 7K100 at 100GB. Let's see which will make it to the market first...
T41, P-M 1.4GHz, 768MB PC2700, Hitachi 5K100 100GB, 14.1" XGA, intel 802.11b/g, CD-RW/DVD, ATI Radeon M7 32MB

I have standing orders with four (*) different retailers for the 7K100. I'll let you all know who actually comes through with one, but as of this morning they all report that the drives aren't available.

I've also emailed two contacts at HGST and asked when the drives will start shipping, one said they're "in the pipeline" the other responded that they're "enroute", which could mean anything from they're sitting on the loading dock in China to they're in a container on I80 as I type this.

Regards,

James

I compare the technical spec of Hitachi 7k100 and Seagate 7k100. It seems to be Hitachi will have higher performance, lower power consumption. Both products are not available in the market yet.

One thing I notice is that, hitachi says "QuietMode" which I hope will be the more quiet version of 7k60. Actually I have no problem with the noise from HDD, as long as it is the normal operating sound. Actually I'm kind of like it in the sense that I know how I/O intensive my application is.

Will wait for the review of these HDDs and then decide to buy one later :) Right now, I have gone with Seagate 5400.2 for 100GB HDD

/me drools.

I don't *need* one (25Gb free on a 60Gb 7200 rpm drive with 5 operational computers on the one drive). But I *want* one.

One thing to consider:
The Seagate's Momentus 7K100 comes with their standard 5 year warranty, am I correct?

Hitachi's Travelstar 7K100 comes with 3 years (in my experience, notebook HDD's typically fail in 4th year or so...).

By the way, Hitachi's 7K100 has about 72% higher data density than their 7K60, so the 7K100 should be even faster for this reason (as verified by the higher maximum Media Transfer Rate of 629 Mbits/sec vs. 518).

It seems they're available on the XPS gen 2s already. I tried customizing one on dell.com and they were indeed available with a 5-day delivery delay.
