T410s (almost) dead

#1 Post by theremin » Mon Aug 26, 2013 4:30 pm

Hi. I have a T410s which has been working very well since i bought it a few months ago (apart from a somewhat glitchy screen connection).
Today it decided to fail completely without warning. When I try to start it up the only thing visibly happening is that the wifi indicator blinks faintly.
The CPU seems to be up to something as well as it gets quite hot when left "on" for a while.

Googling "dead thinkpad" suggests a couple of quick fixes usually involving holding the power button down for a certain amount of time without any batteries och power sources connected,
sometimes while also removing the RAM. None of these have worked.

Is there anything else I could try before disassembling it?
If not, what component(s) would you suggest needs replacing?
Or should I just get a different computer altogether as this one was already rather old when I bought it?

Thankful for any advice! :D

Pull the memory and power it on to see if it beeps. If it doesn't beep, the board is most likely dead. Good luck and welcome to TPF.

Thanks for the help!
Pulling the memory made no difference, so I guess the board might be dead as you said.
How hard is it to replace the board and would it be reasonable to do so considering the current value of the laptop?

You might want to do the same test again, but pull the hard drive, optical drive and WiFi card. No battery too, then do the hitting the power button 10x for second and one last time for 30 seconds just see if one other parts is at fault.

If you're still not getting any action, I'm guessing you can pick up a board on eBay for less than a new machine. You might want to post in the marketplace forum here to see if anyone has an extra board they'd sell you. The motherboard isn't too bad, much easier than the LCD. Pick up the HMM, and hit the service and support training site. It has videos showing how to disassemble the T410 and perhaps more importantly, how to to put it back together.

The blinking light went out when I pulled the WiFi card, other than that nothing has changed. Still no beep or any other signs of life.

How precise do I need to be when pushing the power button? Does it have to be EXACTLY 1 second between each press?
And what is supposed to happen if I do it right?

I have searched eBay for used motherboards, and these are the cheapest I found so far:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-LENOVO-T410 ... 4ac8015f55

http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-LENOVO-T410 ... 2a303962e4

Does it matter which model these came from? (I have the 2924 myself)
I also found this in the marketplace:

Will it work?
Thank you again for all help so far!
