How to shorten file names on a computer?

#1 Post by Atwood921 » Tue Aug 27, 2013 7:10 am

I am working in IT right now, and am helping to reimage computers. This user whose computer I am working with has 40 gb of files in his my documents folder that need to be moved. All of them have moved except for around 430 files because they are buried so deep in folders, or the file name is too long. Is there a program that will shorten file names?

Robocopy or RichCopy should do the copying without shortening the path\file name (which is limited to 255-260 characters, can't remember exactly).

When asking qustion you need to state what operating system(s) are in use, and the software that is in use, eg widows vists, xp w7, office version, Not knowing the above I would suggest you to use this software http://longpathtool.com/
