X220 numlock issue - can't get laptop to type numbers

I have enabled numlock in bios and when I press numlock on an external keyboard or FN-Numlock on the laptop, I hear a beep and see a screen icon indicating the change but no matter what I do, I cannot get the laptop keyboard or external keyboard to type numbers on the number pad of the external keyboard or the numlock keys on the laptop. What am I missing here?
