Need Directions?

#1 Post by jronald » Mon Sep 16, 2013 8:17 pm

Family friend is driving from just North of Raleigh NC to Canton OH. Does NOT want to drive through the mountains.

So I gave her this route:
I85 South to I10 (North Carolina South Carolina Georgia Mississippi Louisiana)
I10 to I12 (Louisiana)
I12 to I55 (Louisiana Mississippi Tennessee Arkansas Missouri Illinois)
I55 to I70 (Indiana)
I70 to I74 (Indiana and Ohio)
The original trip, about 475 miles
My new and improved route, about 2100 miles

She sincerely thanked me for the route, unbelievable

Maybe one of them has a phobia. Back in my early 20's I was rear-ended at 50mph (I was sitting at the on-ramp to the freeway waiting to go, when a lady hit me from behind). It was a serious crash. I was scared to death to go on the freeway for several years after that. I'd get really bad vertigo and panic attacks. not good while you're driving. going over a mountain pass? NOOOOOOO freaking way in hell!!! (also because of my fear of heights which played into it) I had panic attacks going over them too. Panic attacks are hellish and I do anything I can to avoid them.

Maybe, just maybe in the slight off chance that one of them had a similiar phobia? It seems plausible to me anyway.

There's mountains, then there's MOUNTAINS. If motion sickness is the issue, there's a prescription patch that's reported to work well. If it's heights, drop-offs, switchbacks and passes, I believe there should be a shorter route. Can't say I'm all that familiar with that part of the country, but I-85 north to I-95 to I-476 to I-80 west wouldn't seem too bad. The state of Pennsylvania would be the question.

EDIT: Probably I-85 north to I-95 to I-83 (to US 15) to I-80 west would be better.

Regarding phobias, my youngest daughter has been hit 4 times in the past 2 months, in two different cars; one being totaled, and the other damaged. I all 4 cases, it was the other person's fault. She now has a phobia to drive in heavy traffic (and we live in a large metropolitan area). Kinda sad. She's been driving about 7 years and never been at fault in a car accident.

Atleast none of those 4 were her fault. Could you imagine the insurance premium?

I'm mostly ok now. I'm ok if I'm on a familiar highway (whereas before, I'd get panicked even on a very familiar highway). If I get on a highway that I am not familiar with however, I get a little freakish.
