T40 Wi-fi card upgrade

#1 Post by bypass-21 » Mon Sep 16, 2013 9:12 pm

Hello everyone!

i am currently in the process of trying to upgrade the old Wi-fi card on my dusty old T-40

i have already changed the cracked screen and dug up the old dock which still has all the books and keys.

what i need help with is the name of a wi-fi card that can be used with an IBM T40 type 2373-19U and is compatible with WPA2 personal (tech friend says Intel PRO Wireless 2915ABG Mini-PCI WIFI Card WM3B2915ABG, but i cant find one for IBM)

i also want to know of a good site to get a Hard drive caddy for a second hard drive for the Dock since it comes with an Ultrabay 2000

i have the old Wi-fi card out already so im already rocking and rolling here

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

Welcome to the forum!

Compatible cards include:

Intel 2200BG
Intel 2915ABG
IBM (Atheros) b/g
IBM (Atheros) a/b/g

I strongly prefer the non-Intel cards, but YMMV.

Post a WTB (want to buy) ad in the forum's marketplace and someone will come to your rescue shortly.

Hmm, they are all compatible with WPA2 personal right?

and which ones from the list would you recommend? the IBM's? because the one i took out was an intlel.

Thanks again!!

Oh! and what the difference between b/g (BG), and a/b/g (ABG)?

IBM a/b/g or b/g.

In today's day and age, pretty much none, since the routers supporting the "A" band have gone the way of the dodo bird.

The first linked card is the IBM one, however, $18 is a lot of money for one of them nowadays.

The second one is Intel 2200BG.

A much better deal on IBM abg here:

I have both an IBM b/g card and an Intel 2200 card. On my T42, the IBM is way better than the Intel. In fact for my setup, the Intel is not useable. It's about as fast as a 5400 Baud modem while websurfing.

Personally I'd get an IBM one from ajkula and call it a day.

Okay, looks great! My last question is will it work with WPA2 personal? (since its from 2003) because my router is only WPA2 Personal. Also, will it work with my IBM T40? since it only said T43p T42p T41 X41 and X40

Thank so much again for your help

Natively, no.

With a "no-1802" hack you can use this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/TP-Link-TL-WN86 ... 2580a1e7d1

I have it in both my A31p and T43p and love it dearly or:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Broadcom-BCM432 ... 43af09b03a

which I've never used so I can't comment on it...

Not affiliated with either of the sellers linked, proceed at your own risk.

Does the Broadcomm card require the "no-1802" hack also? Where can I find this hack?

The listing for the Broadcomm card says "Not for HP and IBM or Lenovo laptops."

You do need a "no-1802" hack, and that's why the listing states that the card is not for Lenovo or HP laptops.
