Disk size

#1 Post by douzi » Wed May 11, 2005 7:01 pm

I just got my new T42. the hard drive should be 60G. But it looks like it only got 51G. I read here that there might be a hidden partition. But does that need 9G? Also, if anyone here rebuild the box and make the disk to two partitions? I always do that to my previous computers, so, one partition for system and another one for data. If I need to wipe out the system, my data partition can still holds.

Hard drive industry standard defines 1GB as 10**9, but we know 1GB should be 1024**3.
(60*10**9)/(1024**3) = 55.879 GB
The hidden partition is around 4.5GB which brings it you down to your 51GB.

Be sure to make a set of the system recovery discs before you do anything to the drive.

System recovery disks? Do I have to do that by myself?

Yes, you will have to make them yourself. IBM stopped sending them out without charge earlier this year. You can try calling them to see if they will send it to you, but you might have to pay $45.

It has been mentioned in this forum before that you need 7 CDs to make a complete set of recovery discs for the T42.

Yes, most manufacturers do not include a Windows setup disk.
They include a set of system recovery discs, or in this case, a hidden partition that include an OEM version of the OS and the pre-loaded software.

You can make one set of recovery discs with your T42. Several people have hinted that you can make another set after you use your recovery discs to restore your system to its initial state.
