Installing a keyboard "Bezel" on a T22

#1 Post by Cholly » Wed May 11, 2005 10:11 pm

I just bought a replacement keyboard for my T22 (which it really doesn't need) and keyboard "bezel" (which it does).

IBM (whoops, Lenovo) has a swell little animation

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-45877

explaining how to remove a keyboard, and replace it.

but I found no similar explanation on bezel removal.

Any suggestions?

I'm not too cheap to pay someone $50 to do this easy job, but it's a quick job, and I'd rather not be without the machine.

I'm assuming you are referring to the part of the keyboard that surrounds the power and volume buttons, and says "T-22" on it- pull and snap off- put it back on the new keyboard bottom (side towards you)first.

If your question is about a seperate part, please describe it or give fru

Yes, I think that's right. The keyboard sort of sits in it. No doubt I have to take out the keyboard first, and then follow your instructions.

I'm replacing the item (the "Keyboar bezel") because it's cracked below the right shift key -- just above the part of the DVD player where it is closest to the front of the machine. Nothing serious, but it's an inexpensive enough fix.

thanks for the advice. I would have gone blundering around removing screws.

I've replaced the bezel in my T30. If yours is like mine, it's a combination of the palm rests and the trim around the keyboard. It took me about a half hour. Remove the keyboard, hard drive, battery, and UltraBay module. Remove a bunch of screw covers and screws. Then, it snaps off, and you can install the other one.

It's not too intensive but tedious. The hardware maintenance manual for the T30 had good step-by-step directions, and I'm assuming the HMM for the T22 should too. Good luck!

OK well you did name the part correctly per the service manual --"keyboard bezel"
Not too bad but a few screws for sure. Take your time and set aside an hour, though you may be done in 15. Be gentle with the 3 cosmetic squares on the bottom front, you can reuse them if you're gentle.

An exacto or other thin bladed knife works great for getting the plastic squares off that cover the screw holes. Just make sure to keep the sticky side face up and away from dusty and be careful to not "cut" them when trying to get them off.

On the T22 you don't need to remove the hard drive or the ultrabay to replace the bezel (I speak from experience).

Also, the hardware manual is not too clear on this, but you have to remove the screw that hold the CMOS battery holder in place.

Removing the bezel is tough - the snaps along the edges are tight! (There are tabs that snap into recesses in the bottom case or vice verss) Just work at them patiently, and they will give way. Fortunately, you don't need to worry about breaking the bezel when you remove it, and when you replace it you'll be able to see how the snaps work.

Thanks for all your generous help (you and all!)

but I am getting convinced that my hammy fingers might be better suited to carrying the T22 someplace for surface.

Any ideas about where to go in Manhattan? Quick job, one day service?
