Same old Nvidia GPU problem

#1 Post by yert33 » Wed Sep 25, 2013 9:36 am

I have a T61 6459-CTO on which I suspect a bad NVidia GPU. Manufacture date is 08/06.

It will not POST. No beeps. No nada.

I want to replace the system board to see if this fixes it.

Looking in the HMM I see only 2 FRU numbers with the Intel video chip - 42W7651 and 48W7875, both of which do not include my machine type in the "compatible" section.

Question: Will either of these work in my T61? If not does someone have a suggestion on correct FRU to search for?

TIA

Those are correct numbers for a 15.4" widescreen T61/T61p, which your machine is.
42W7651 Merom CPU capable
42W7875 or 44C4238 Penryn capable
With Middleton's BIOS all are Penryn capable.

Thank you, RBS! So I assume I need to determine if I have a Merom or Penryn CPU?

If you apply the Middleton BIOS (and you really should!), any of these CPUs will do.
But Penryn boards are preferable. They must have M's BIOS if you want to use a Merom on them.
T7100	Merom	1.80	2 MB
T7300	Merom	2.00	4 MB
T7500	Merom	2.20	4 MB
T7700	Merom	2.40	4 MB
T7800	Merom	2.60	4 MB
T8100	Penryn	2.10	3 MB
T8300	Penryn	2.40	3 MB
T9300	Penryn	2.50	6 MB
T9500	Penryn	2.60	6 MB
X9000	Penryn	2.80	6 MB

Thanks, RBS. I have a T9300. Found and bought a 42W7875. So we'll see!

...AND! I just noticed you mention Guinness as the Real black stuff... HA! My choice also!

Replacing system board worked. Yay! Thank you, RealBlackStuff! In celebration I had about 4 Guinness beers.

Hah, that's nothing!
Last time I was in Kinsale (Ireland) with my brother-in-law, we visited all 43 pubs there in one day, and had a pint in each of them! Scout's honor!
Not to mention a fair number of G&T's in between...
FYI: I am no alcoholic and I only weigh 170 lbs.
I just LOVE my Guinness!

I'm not even a drinker, but while I was visiting Ireland (a beautiful country) I was offered a freshly brewed Guinness on an empty stomach. As a result I have no need to see Gravity in order to know what it is like to fly around in space.

Fresh Guinness is not just Stout, but something far more mysterious.

I've never been to the Storehouse in Dublin, that's just for tourists!
There are plenty of pubs in the Temple Bar area to go to instead.
But I prefer local pubs on the Southside over touristy ones in the city center.
We also lived less than 10 minutes away from one of Ireland's best pubs: Johnnie Fox's.
Then again, Guinness is not everybody's taste.
Those who live in the southern part of Ireland probably prefer Murphy's, which is just as tasty, but a bit less heavy than Guinness.
Murphy's is my second favorite beer.
I have yet to try an American beer that doesn't taste like cat's piss...
I have no problems with the Mexican Dos Equis though, and funnily enough, my daughter has met with The Most Interesting Man in the World!
