Trackpoint screen marks
Trackpoint screen marks
I've read a few threads concerning the marks the trackpoint leaves on the screen, but I'm still not clear on whether or not the marks will stay over time. Should I buy/use some sort of screen protector? Will the marks stay if they're there enough?
The 14" can get keyboard/trackpoint marks, but not nearly to the extent of the powerbooks. I've noticed a very slight mark in the center of the screen on my 15" from the trackpoint, but only noticed it the one time I removed the LCD panel. Nonetheless, I took off the trackpoint nub, as I use the touchpad anyways.
In the end, if it does touch and touches enough times, it will eventually become permanent (but maybe not highly visible at all). If you pay fairly close attention to your screen and don't notice anything, I wouldn't worry.

Re: Trackpoint screen marks
I am using a microfiber small cloth which was supplied to eyeglasses ,for preventing Trackpoint mark on display panel.
This is very thin ,washable and usefull to clean TFT panel in every use.
When I close ThinkPad display, I always unfold it and put it on the keyboard to cover the Trackpoint.
It works like a buffer preventing mark.
when I open the ThinkPad , I always use it and clean the surface of display panel including mark and also Keyboard.
I recommend it.

I get the mark as well on my 14" T42p, but only from the TrackPoint, never from the keyboard.
I've had older PowerBooks where this was a very big problem, though the new aluminum ones (finally) have enough gap between the LCD and the keys that it doesn't happen at all.
So far no keyboard marks on my T42p, but the little "dirt circle" from the TrackPoint is a bit annoying, even though it comes off easily enough. I'm just concerned that after x years it will become a permanent blemish.

Trust me, it still happens to the Aluminum powerbooks, but you're right in that it's not as bad as the Tibook was. The 15" T42, since it's such a behemoth, doesn't suffer from keyboard marks at all, and I regularly carry it along with about 2800 pages worth of books in my backpack.asiafish wrote:I get the mark as well on my 14" T42p, but only from the TrackPoint, never from the keyboard.

If the trackpoint does touch your screen, it WILL become permanent after several months, but it may take a year or more for it to be very visible/annoying, depending on how much it rubs...covering the keyboard with a cloth before closing the laptop should do a good job of taking care of that problem.

The keyboard may rub on the 15 or 17" aluminum PowerBooks (don't have one, wouldn't know), but I've now owned two 12" PowerBooks and neither of them had any trace of keyboard marks on the LCD.
